Brewers draft Cerro Coso's Franklin Romero, Jr.
Cerro Coso's Franklin Romero, Jr., was drafted by the Milwaukee
Brewers in the 20th round (616 overall), becoming the second in as many
years to have his name called in
MLB's First Year Player Draft.
“My heart just stopped for a minute,” said Romero in a phone interview.
“I didn’t know what to do. I was out of my mind.”
Coyotes coach Dick Adams said he was ecstatic for Romero, who had scouts
looking at his outfielder the entire 2009 season.

Cerro Coso's Jake Orr signs on with Colorado State University-Pueblo
Cerro Coso catcher Jake Orr signed on to play with Colorado State
University at Pueblo on Wednesday, continuing a long line of Coyotes who
have moved on to play for the school.
Orr becomes the 18th player in 17 years to move on to Pueblo, formally
Southern Colorado University. That outpaces the next two closest schools
— St. Mary’s and Nevada — who each had eight.
“It’s the greatest opportunity I’ve had so far,” Orr said. “(Cerro Coso)
really helped to to where I’ll be going next year and I’m pretty excited
about it.”

Coyotes get win in final home game
Cerro Coso went out on top in its home finale, defeating Victor
Valley 15-4 on Tuesday.
The Coyotes will conclude the season on Thursday traveling to
Victorville for a doubleheader. They need to sweep in order to even
their overall record, which now stands at 20-22 (8-14 in Foothill
Conference play).
Coach Dick Adams got all of his sophomore pitchers in the game, but not
before starter Eugene Wright dealt for seven strong innings, giving up
three runs on 10 hits with one walk and striking out 12.

Coyotes win twin bill in an offensive barrage
Cerro Coso did something against LA City in a doubleheader it really
hasn’t done all year against opponents — the Coyotes responded to giving
up runs with scoring more runs.
The results paid off with especially in game one with a 13-10 win, but
were more dramatic in game two with a 22-5 thrashing.
“It was a good effort today, bouncing back on last week’s losses,” said
coach Dick Adams.

There was little more Cerro Coso coach Dick Adams could ask from his
freshman starter, Nick Salas in game two against Chaffey.
The hurler kept his Coyotes in the game against Foothill Conference
power Chaffey, but ultimately it wasn’t enough.
Cerro Coso lost both games of the doubleheader at Chaffey on Saturday,
dropping Salas’ game 5-4 in 10 innings after losing game one, 9-1.

“We’re just so inconsistent. We’re inconsistent on hitting; we’re
inconsistent on pitching,” said coach Dick Adams.

Cerro Coso completed its second Foothill Conference sweep on
Saturday, defeating Barstow in a doubleheader, 12-2 and 10-7.
“We just told them we’ve got to get back on the winning track,” said
coach Dick Adams. “We lost three last week, but you know, next week’s
opponent is way better than these guys. Next week’s opponent is winning
the league, so we can be spoilers and get after it. But you know we did
what we had to do here which was win here.”

Cerro Coso played better against Mt. San Jacinto College on Saturday
than in its series opener, but the Coyotes weren’t able to avoid a
sweep, losing both games of a doubleheader.
Coso falls to 12-15 overall (4-8 in the Foothill Conference) thanks to
2-1 and 6-5 losses to the Eagles.
Eugene Wright gave up just four hits in game one, but an error the
fourth marred what was an other wise stellar performance.

Cerro Coso gave up 11 runs in two innings as the Coyotes fell to Mt.
San Jacinto 17-4 on Thursday.
The Eagles plated six runs in the second and five more in the third and
cruised from there.
Cerro Coso meanwhile, struck out 14 times and didn’t have more than one
runner on base until the fifth inning, when Markus Adams and Jake Smith
both walked with two outs.
It wasn’t until the eighth when the Coyotes mounted a sustained
offensive drive, with most of the starters out of the game.

Coyotes take a bite out of AVC over the weekend
Cerro Coso earned its first sweep of the Foothill Conference over the
weekend, defeating Antelope Valley 8-4 and 13-6 on Saturday.
The win put Cerro Coso’s record at 12-12 overall and 4-5 in conference
play.
Eugene Wright survived an early barrage by the Marauders to earn the
win. He went seven complete innings, giving up four earned runs on nine
hits and two walks while striking out five.

Solid pitching and opportunistic offense overcame seven Cerro Coso
errors as the Coyotes defeated Antelope Valley College 11-8 on Thursday.
The win snaps a four-game Foothill Conference losing streak for the
Coyotes. It also represents Cerro Coso’s second win in conference play.
The Marauders had just two earned runs out of their eight.

In game one, the Coyotes fell into a quick 5-0 hole after two innings
before starter Karl Lorentson got into a groove and kept the Roadrunners
off the boards.

The Cerro Coso offense was flat on Saturday in a doubleheader against
Foothill Conference foe, but for one of the games, the Coyotes still had

Darren Travers pitched a four-hit shutout to propel the Coyotes to a 3-0
win in game one. Then the Wolverines enacted their revenge in game two,
winning 9-6.
The split drops the Coyotes to 1-2 in Conference play, after dropping
the series opener last Thursday.

Cerro Coso gave up an early 4-1 lead to drop its Foothill Conference
opener 18-4 to San Bernardino.
The Coyotes gave up 11 runs between the fourth and sixth innings to put
the game away, knocking out starter Eugene Wright who went six and a
third innings, giving up 12 runs, 11 earned, on 15 hits.
Coach Dick Adams said he was disappointed with the loss, which drops his
team to 8-8 overall (0-1 in the Foothill), but credited San Bernardino
with great situational hitting.

There wasn’t a whole lot for coach Dick Adams to feel good about
following a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Golden West, save one
thing: Karl Lorentson.
In game one, Cerro Coso watched its No. 2 starter get dinged up in an
11-2 loss. Game two, the Coyotes fell 15-10 after giving up seven runs
in the first inning.
“We just didn’t play a good brand of ball,” Adams said. “ We didn’t play
a good brand of ball at all. Anything that could go wrong, went wrong.
(But) we still tried to hang in there and bang it in this case.”

Cerro Coso drops twin bill to Golden West
Cerro Coso dropped its final pair of pre-conference games on
Saturday, falling 11-2 in the first half of a doubleheader against
Golden West and 15-10 in the late game.
Darren Travers took the loss in game one, throwing four and a third
innings, gibing up eight runs, six earned, on 10 hits and no walks with
one strike out.
The two teams battled through four innings, with the score tied at 2-2
heading into the top of the fifth when Golden West tagged Travers for
six runs capped off with a three-run homer by Sean Burleson.

Cerro Coso extended its winning streak to six games with a 17-7
victory over Golden West on Friday.
The Coyotes had 13 hits on the night with at least one from everyone in
the lineup.
Larry Wagner led the hitting, going 3-5 with four RBIs and was a home
run shy of a cycle. Jon Lewis and Markus Adams were the only other
hitters with more than one base knock, each with two. Adams also had two
runs scored.

Cerro Coso needed two dramatic finishes to sweep Santa Barbara in a
Tuesday doubleheader.
The first came in the bottom of the seventh and final inning of Game 1
when Franklin Romero scored from first on an errant pick off throw to
lead the Coyotes to a 2-1 win.
The second came on a two-run walk off homer from Josh Gust to give Coso
a 11-9 victory.
“Last year that team just lit us up,” said coach Dick Adams. “This is a
very good team and a very good program. It was two good wins for us.”

Cerro Coso wins game one of a doubleheader in wild fashion
An errant pick throw mixed with Franklin Romero’s speed allowed Cerro
Coso to win game one of its doubleheader against Santa Barbara 2-1 on
Tuesday.
Romero was hit by a pitch with no on and two out in the bottom of the
seventh and final inning with the game tied 1-1.
Having to respect his speed, pitcher Jeremy Peterson attempted to keep
him close to first but airmailed the ball into the bullpen.

Wright deals, Cerro Coso sweeps West LA
Cerro Coso got a three-hit gem out of Eugene Wright, then the defense
took care of the rest in a doubleheader sweep over West LA College on
Saturday.
Cerro Coso won the first game 4-1 behind Wright’s throwing a complete
seven inning three hitter. The Coyotes struggled a bit at the plate in
game two, but came to life in the eighth for four runs to win 5-4.
The win evens the Coyotes’ record at 5-5 heading into five tough games
this week: A doubleheader today against Santa Barbara and a three-game
series against Golden West starting Friday.

Coyotes refuse to go down without a fight
Friday night started rough for Darren Travers and Cerro Coso, falling
into a 9-0 hole in the first inning. But both he and the rest of the
team bared down and defeated West Los Angeles 18-11 thanks to an
eight-run fifth inning.
Things just didn’t go right for the Coyotes in the first inning. Travers
loaded the bases with no outs on a soft-liner up the middle, an infield
single and a hit batter.
He then gave up the hardest ball hit in the inning, a bases-clearing
double to deep center, and then the wheels came off.

A lack of consistent offense spelled trouble for Cerro Coso in a twin
bill against Bakersfield College and Taft, losing both 6-4.
Cerro Coso had just 10 hits between the two games, six of which game

his lineup, but noted the team will get some help when German Barajas
returns to the line up from a hand injury.

A less than stellar day at the plate for Cerro Coso exacerbated a
less than stellar outing from one of its top pitchers against Grossmont,
in an 8-4 loss.
Grossmont (7-1) did most of its damage in the sixth inning, when the
team KO’d Eugene Wright, who recorded the first two outs before making
an exit.
Coach Dick Adams said his starter still pitched effectively for the most
part, but made a couple of mistakes that got hit hard.

Coyotes shut out L.A. City
Just three days removed from its pitching getting shelled, the Cerro
Coso hurlers came through with a 9-0 shutout over L.A. City on Tuesday.
The Coyotes (2-2) were coming off an 11-6 loss last Saturday when their
starter didn’t make an out in the first inning against Oxnard.
On Tuesday, behind Darren Travers (1-0), Cerro Coso found a rhythm that
couldn’t be disrupted, allowing the locals to even out their overall
record.

Coyote pitching shelled in loss to Oxnard
The Cerro Coso bullpen got an extended workout on Saturday against
Oxnard, as starter Josh Orr was KO'd early during an 11-6 loss.
Orr was tagged for five runs without recording an out in the first

Carl Lorentson nearly saved the day in the inning, coming in relief,
getting a quick strike out and a pop out to the catcher with the bases
loaded.

The Cerro Coso baseball team rebounded in a big way from Thursday’s
season opening loss, by defeating No. 12 Santa Barbara on Friday, 7-1.
Preseason All-American Eugene Wright went the distance, throwing a
complete game five-hitter, giving up the lone run in the first inning.
From there he just cruised.
Coach Dick Adams had him on a 90 pitch count for the day, which he went
over by 15, but his coach was more than willing to let him keep going.

After taking a 5-3 lead into the eighth inning, Cerro Coso gave up
three runs to Ventura to lose 6-5 in the Coyotes season opener on
Thursday.
“We didn’t close things out,” said coach Dick Adams. “But we told the
guys we learn from our wins and learn from our losses. In baseball, we
let go of today and come back tomorrow and try again.”
Joe Zendejas took the loss, going two innings in relief, giving up three
earned runs on three hits, two walks and a hit batter.

decade gone — decade longer than coach Dick Adams wanted to wait for his
third.

Coso baseball.

Cerro Coso ranked in preseason poll
The Cerro Coso baseball team is ranked No. 19 in the
California Community
College Baseball Coaches Association preseason poll. This was the
first time the Coyotes have been ranked since they won the Foothill
Conference in 2001.
Cerro Coso joins Chaffey as the only two schools in the Foothill to be
ranked in the top 20 poll. The Coyotes received 26 points, edging out
Saddleback.

Pair of Cerro Coso pitchers moving up to play Division I
Cerro Coso will be sending off two pitchers to greener pastures next
fall, as Darren Travers and Eugene Wright each signed letters of intent
on Wednesday to play Division I college baseball.
Travers will make a cross-country trek to the University of Buffalo.
Wright will stay a little closer, heading to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Buffalo competes in the Mid-America Conference, which includes Western
Michigan, Ball State, Kent State and Akron.
Cal Poly plays in the Big West Conference, which includes such baseball
power houses as Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State.
