Penn shuts out Cuesta, Coyotes split Saturday tourney games

By Nathan Ahle, The Daily Independent

The Cerro Coso Coyotes baseball team got the Cuesta/Pepsi Classic off to a good start Friday afternoon in San Luis Obispo, as Ryan Penn threw a five-hit shutout win over the host Cuesta team.

"We just came out and attacked them"

"He (Penn) just dealt today," said Cerro Coso Head Coach Dick Adams. "His pitch count was OK, so I just left him in there."

Cerro Coso got things going in the top of the first, scoring three runs. Kip Keith led off with a single and stole second base. Centerfielder Nick Wagner grounded out, advancing Keith to third. After Penn was hit by a pitch, cleanup hitter Caleb Gallagher doubled to the outfield, scoring Keith. Adam Auer followed with a groundout RBI that scored Penn. Rodney Black was hit by a pitch, and Norm Love followed with a single that scored Gallagher.

"We just came out and attacked them," Adams said.

After the three-run first, Penn and Cuesta pitched Steve Evoniuc settled the game into a pitcher's duel. Both teams were held off the scoreboard until the eighth inning, with Penn scattering hits in the middle innings.

In the top of the eighth, Cerro Coso extended its lead, led again by Gallagher, who went 2-for-5 and had what Adams called "a big game." Gallagher singled, followed by an Auer single that moved him to third. Black attempted to squeeze in Gallagher, but bunted the ball foul. Adams took the bunt sign off, and Black responded with a double that scored Gallagher. Love flied out to right field, advancing Black, and Tony Teixiera squeezed in Black with the Coyotes' final run.

Saturday, the Coyotes faced off against Canada, winning 10-1 and fell 27-10 to Allan Hancock College in the final two games of the tournament. Look for highlights from these games in Tuesday's edition of The Daily Independent.
