Cerro Coso splits with SBVC; falls two games back in Foothill

The Cerro Coso Coyotes split a Saturday doubleheader with the San Bernardino Valley College Wolverines, winning the opener 1-0 but falling 11-10 in the nightcap.

In the first game, Ryan Penn earned his fifth win of the season, pitching a two-hit shutout.

"Ryan dominated," said Coyotes Head Coach Dick Adams. "He was really on his mark."

Cerro Coso grabbed a run in the first, the only tally of the game. Kip Keith and Nick Wagner singled to lead off the game, then Matt Smith grounded into a double play that scored Keith from third. Cerro Coso left 10 men on base; while San Bernardino Valley left two on.

Penn (5-2) struck out eight and did not allow a walk in his effort.

The second game looked to be disastrous for Cerro Coso. The Wolverines held an 8-1 lead after four innings, including six unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth for SBVC.

Things appeared to be out of hand heading into the ninth, with the Coyotes trailing 10-3. However, seven Cerro Coso runs crossed the plate in the inning, with the big play coming on a squeeze play by Tony Texeira that scored Adam Auer and tied the game at 10-10.

However, the bottom of the ninth proved to be the problem. Darren Green allowed two hits, and the leadoff runner slid in under Auer's tag to score the winning run. There was a question of obstruction at first base and whether the tag at the plate was applied in time, but the umpires' safe call allowed the Wolverines to salvage the split.

The twinbill gives Cerro Coso a 6-3 conference mark, tied with the Rio Hondo Roadunners and two games behind 8-1 SBVC.

The Coyotes will face Rio Hondo tomorrow on the road, and will host the Roadrunners in a Saturday doubleheader.
