The Cerro Coso Coyotes have found their number-two starter, and his name
is Matt Smith.
The freshman from Oregon grabbed his third win of the season Thursday
with eight solid innings on a 10-3 win over the Victor Valley College
Rams at the Dawg Yard.
"Smith pitched a good ballgame," said Coyotes Head Coach Dick Adams. "He
threw very well and got his breaking ball over."
Smith (3-0) allowed four hits and two earned runs, striking out three in
his outing. Cory Rickets pitched a solid ninth inning in relief.
Cerro Coso trailed 1-0 in the third inning, but broke the game open with
five runs in the bottom of the third.
Two errors by the Rams' catcher did Victor Valley in, but the big blow
in the inning came off the bat of Smith, who drilled a double that
scored Nick Wagner and Ryan Penn. The Coyote hurler later scored on a
groundout by shortstop Norm Love.
The Coyotes added three more runs in the seventh, all coming with two
out in the inning.
Smith went 2-for-5 with two RBI's in the game, helping his own cause.
Wagner went 1-for-2, but his only hit was a key triple that added an
insurance run in the eighth inning.
Saturday, the two teams renew pleasantries with a doubleheader in
Victorville. Penn will pitch the first game of the twinbill, while the
second Cerro Coso started has yet to be determined.
