Coso explodes for 13 runs against AVC

In what is turning into quite a Foothill Conference rivalry, the Cerro Coso Coyotes and Antelope Valley College Marauders renewed pleasantries at Lancaster Municipal Stadium Thursday.

It was the Coyotes who had the upper hand, as Ryan Penn pitched a complete game to lead the Coyotes to a 13-6 win.

Things didn't look so promising for Cerro Coso early on, as AVC jumped out to a 3-0 lead through four innings, as Marauder started Chase Dominguez carried a no-hitter.

It all turned around for the locals in the fifth, however, as the Coyotes scored three runs. After Matt Smith singled and Caleb Gallagher walked, Adam Auer drove in Smith, one of his four RBI's on the day. Norm Love reached second base on an error, which allowed Gallagher to score.

With the game tied 3-3, the Coyotes surged ahead in the sixth, scoring eight runs on five hits.

Kip Keith led off with a triple and scored on a Nick Wagner sacrifice fly. Penn and Smith walked, and Gallagher drove in the pitcher with a double down the left-field line. Auer followed with a two-run single that scored Smith and Gallagher. Two batters later, Rodney Black tripled deep to left, scoring Auer and Love, who was hit by a pitch. Antoine McLeod doubled in Black and later scored on a Keith sacrifice fly.

Penn (7-3) held the fort for the rest of the way, allowing six runs, five of which were earned, on 14 hits, walking two and striking out eight.

When it was all said and done, Coyotes Head Coach Dick Adams was pleased.

"It was a good win there," Adams said. "We're developing a good rivalry with them (AVC)."

The coach added that the players enjoyed the opportunity to take the field at a professional baseball stadium.

Saturday, the Coyotes and the Marauders will square off in a doubleheader at the Dawg Yard beginning at noon. Matt Smith will start the seven-inning opening game, while Caleb Gallagher will take the mound in the nightcap. The games can be heard on KLOA 1240 AM.
