The Cerro Coso Coyotes continue to play solid baseball, rallying to defeat the Antelope Valley Marauders 9-4 in the second game of a doubleheader at the Dawg Yard, earning them a split on the day and giving the Coyotes a win in the three-game season series. The win came after Antelope Valley defeated the Coyotes in the opener, 6-3.

Southpaw Matt Smith started on the mound for Cerro Coso in the first game, and was victimized by defensive miscues. In the first inning, Antelope Valley scored three runs, as the game began with a leadoff walk, a missed cutoff man on a double that led to a run, and a dropped fly ball in centerfield. The Coyotes made three errors in the first game, and Head Coach Dick Adams referred to the miscues as "costly."

The offensive bright spots came in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Nick Wagner singled, stole second and scored on an error by the Marauder shortstop. The following inning, Antoine McLeod singled and stole second, then scored on a double by Kip Keith. Keith later scored after Ryan Penn hit a sharp grounder that the shortstop couldn't handle.

The second game was hampered by a 30-minute rain delay, but Caleb Gallagher battled through what was at times steady rain to earn his first win in conference play.

"Gallagher pitched very well," said Adams. "He kept them off-balance and kept them from starting a rally."

Cerro Coso exploded for nine runs on only seven hits, as walks and errors hurt the Marauders.

Matt Smith had the big blow in the second game for the Coyotes, drilling a three-run double in the fourth inning that scored McLeod, Wagner and Penn. Smith finished the second game with four RBI's. Wagner scored three times for the Coyotes, while Keith added a 2-for-5 day.

With the split, Cerro Coso moves to 17-10 overall, with an 11-7 record in conference play, while Antelope Valley falls to 5-19 overall, with a 3-12 conference mark.

The War Eagles of Mt. San Jacinto College will visit the Dawg Yard Thursday for a single game at 2:30pm, and the two teams will travel south for a Saturday doubleheader beginning at noon.
