Heading into a bye week before the start of the Foothill Conference
tournament, the Cerro Coso Coyotes earned a split with the Mt. San
Jacinto College Eagles at the Dawg Yard Saturday. The Coyotes won the
first game 10-1, but dropped the nightcap 15-8.
Matt Smith went the distance for the Coyotes in the seven-inning opener,
allowing only four hits and two walks in another complete game for the
left-hander.
"Matt pitched very well," said Coyotes Head Coach Dick Adams. "He was
very effective and did an outstanding job."
Cerro Coso scored early and often in the game, taking a 7-1 lead after
four innings and never letting up, scoring in every frame but the fifth.
Norm Love had the top offensive game for the Dawgs, going 3-for-4 with
three runs batted in and drilling a double. Andrew Masojc and Rodney
Black also went 2-for-3 with doubles, while Paul Saville added a 2-for-3
effort of his own with a pair of runs driven in.
In the nightcap, the Coyotes were just three outs away from a sweep
before the game slipped away. Cerro Coso led 8-4 heading into the top of
the ninth, but the Eagles responded with 11 runs in the ninth to steal a
victory.
Further contributing to Cerro Coso's woes were six errors, three of
which came in the outfield, leading to key extra-base at-bats.
Kade McAllister earned the start for Cerro Coso and struck out nine
while walking only one over seven innings of work, but again was unable
to earn a victory.
"He's pitched well two weeks in a row," said Adams, "but hasn't been
able to get a win."
Ryan Short, Urbano Sanchez and Greg Byron each followed in relief, but
neither man was able to retire more than two hitters and each reliever
was roughed up. Finally, Masojc was called in from third base and
retired two men and struck out a hitter.
Despite the loss in the second game, the Coyotes took two of three from
Mt. San Jacinto to finish the regular season 12-12 in conference play.
Cerro Coso is idle this week, and will learn the identity of their
tournament opponent after the conclusion of other conference games this
week.
