The Cerro Coso Coyotes wrapped up their 2005 season with two games
Thursday and Saturday in the Foothill Conference Tournament.
The Coyotes lost to San Bernardino Valley College Thursday, falling
11-8. Despite the loss, Cerro Coso traveled to Palm Desert to face the
College of the Desert Roadrunners and grabbed a 2-1 win in the season
finale.
With the season complete, Cerro Coso finished with a 17-21 overall
record and a 13-14 mark in Foothill Conference play, finishing in fifth
place in the nine-team conference. The sub-.500 record is one of only
four in the 13-year history of the Cerro Coso baseball program.
The Coyotes were well-represented in postseason awards, however. Head
Coach Dick Adams' squad featured four players on the Foothill
Conference's All-Conference Team.
First baseman/pitcher Matt Smith was named to the First Team as a
utility player. Smith, a left-handed sophomore, hit .373 to lead the
team, with 56 hits and two home runs on the season.
Rookie Coyote outfielders Paul Saville and Tyler Curran were also named
to the First Team. Saville, a Canadian product who also recently
received the Fire Mountain Academic Award for his 4.0 grade point
average, hit .346 with 44 hits and three homers on the season. Curran, a
graduate of Burroughs High School, hit .338 with 44 hits and two home
runs this year.
Cerro Coso second baseman Rodney Black was named to the Second Team.
Black, who set the school record for being hit by a pitch this year, hit
.284 with 31 hits and a pair of home runs this season, his second with
the Coyotes.
