Several former local baseball players are becoming successful college
athletes.
This Friday, in the Tempe Regionals of the NCAA tournament leading up to
the College World Series, No. 23 Coastal Carolina will face the
University of Nevada - Las Vegas Runnin' Rebels.
Former Junior Dawgs Jon Foisy and Mike Cruz will take the field for
Coastal Carolina and UNLV, respectively.
Foisy, a senior who also played for Burroughs High School and Cerro Coso
Community College, batted .280 with two home runs and 46 runs batted in,
playing in 59 games for the Chanticleers.
Cruz played for coaches John Martin and Rocky Groves as a member of the
Junior Dawgs, and now stars for fourth-ranked UNLV.
In addition to Foisy and Cruz, other local products are still playing
ball. Casey Groves and Robert Saenz, who also played for BHS and Cerro
Coso, have completed their college careers at the University of St.
Mary's, another four-year college.
The Daily Independent will provide follow-up reports on these athletes
in future editions as they battle through their college playoffs.
