VENTURA - For only the third time in their 15 years of existence, the
Cerro Coso Coyotes opened their baseball season with a win. The victims
were the Pirates of Ventura college, who the Coyotes pillaged for a 5-2
win in 10 innings in their opener of the Bash at the Beach Tournament.
“I'll tell ya,” said Adams after Friday's game, “Our kids played hard.
We had good bench support and it was just a fun game to be around.”
Fun? Well maybe a little more for Cerro Coso then Ventura.
Tied 2-2 heading into the tenth inning, Cody Rieger led off by drawing a
walk. He promptly moved to second on a wild pitch, and a few minutes
later he was on third with the same assistance from the Pirate reliever.
While Rieger was moving around the bases on wild pitches, Tyler
McAllister was working the count in his favor and eventually drawing a
base on balls to put runners on the corners. Frederick Bello was the
next batter and his chopper back to the pitcher was launched down the
rightfield line, allowing Rieger and McAllister to score while Bello
stopped at second.
Cerro Coso added one more in the inning when Bello scored on an error by
the first baseman to make it 5-2.
McAllister (1-0), who had come on in relief for the Coyotes, made the
rally stand up in the bottom half of the tenth to earn the win.
Jessie Zuber got the start for Cerro Coso, going six innings and
allowing an unearned run on eight hits and striking out one. Ryan
Fischer relieved Zuber in the seventh and gave up one run, a walk and
one strikeout in an inning and a third.
Colby Ingram pitched two-thirds of an inning giving up a walk and
striking out one.
The Coyotes play their first doubleheader of the year today when they
take on L.A. Mission at 10 a.m., followed by tournament host Oxnard at 2
p.m. Kyle Tullis will get the start in the morning tilt, while Burroughs
grad Clint Williamson will take the hill the afternoon.
