Late charge not enough in Cerro Coso loss to Eagles

By Tim Allen, Staff Reporter, The Daily Independent

“I have to give our guys a lot of credit...”

SYLMAR - The Coyotes got started a little late Tuesday afternoon in their makeup game with Los Angeles Mission College, losing 7-6.

The Eagles (5-5) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second that Cerro Coso's (4-5) Jon Proesl quickly countered in the third with a solo home run. But the Coyote offense went dead for the next four innings while Missions was able to collect six more runs and take a 7-1 lead.

“I have to give our guys a lot of credit,” said Cerro Coso head coach Dick Adams, “they didn't just roll over. We answered, but we just did it a little too late.

“Our guys are trained in executing the short game when its tight, and we just didn't execute there today. We missed a sac, missed a hit-and-run and left guys at third base and that hurt.”

Jamie Cameron (0-2) went four innings, pitching for the second time since being reactivated from the disabled list. He allowed four and two earned runs, walking one and striking out one.

“(Cameron) pitched very well,” Adams said. “He didn't dominate, but he did well.”

Adams had placed Cameron on a 65-pitch limit, and the red-shirt sophomore had hit 62 by the time the fourth frame came to a close.

Ryan Gorzitze pitched 2-1/3 innings, allowing five runs of which three were earned. Garret Argyle came in to throw the final 1-2/3 innings and struck out two.

Cerro Coso out hit LA Mission 9-8, with Proesl leading the way at 3-for-5. He added a double and a run scored to his solo homer in the third. Andrew Hill (2-for-5) and Royal Good (2-for-4) were the only Coyotes with multiple hits.

Cerro Coso could have used the hot bat of first baseman Cam White, who was away from the team up north. White, a theatrical arts major, was attending a Vassar College audition that had been set before the season and prior to the rescheduled game with the Eagles.

The Coyotes will face three very tough foes this weekend as they head southward to play in the Pacific Coast Tournament in San Marcos. They will face off Friday with Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut in the opening round before playing Palomar and Los Angeles Pierce colleges Saturday at the tournament site.

Cerro Coso then returns home Tuesday for a 2 p.m. game against El Camino at the Dawg Yard.
