Despite creating opportunities, Coyotes fall to San Bernardino

By Cheeto Barrera, Sports Editor, The Daily Independent

“We just had some holes in our lineup”

Cerro Coso’s baseball team were getting hits against San Bernardino Valley, but not when they needed them.

The Coyotes left 10 men on base, including seven in scoring position, and ultimately lost 9-6.

“(Our team) played hard, the kids went after it,” said coach Dick Adams. “But give credit to their pitcher. He did a pretty good pitching. We just didn’t get the hits when we had to have them.”

Cerro Coso opened a 3-0 lead in the second inning on RBI singles by Kyle Hanson and Andrew Hill, scoring Tyler McAllister and Hanson. Mark Sayas scored the third run for the Coyotes after reaching on an error.

San Bernardino responded quickly putting up three runs of its own on three hits. The Wolverines also drew two walks and had a hit batsmen by starter Jessie Zuber.

Zuber lasted six innings, giving up five runs on six hits, four of them earned. He walked two and fanned five.

San Bernardino took the lead in the third on back-to-back doubles to go up 4-3.

The score remained through the sixth inning despite chances by Cerro Coso to regain the lead.

“We mounted a couple of rallies but we couldn’t get any runs across,” Adams said.

Instead, the Wolverines increased the deficit to 5-3.

Cerro Coso was able to get a run across the plate the following inning when Sayas came around to score after he hit a single and was advanced to third when the third baseman mishandled a grounder by Royal Good.

Zuber was pulled in favor of Jamie Cameron in the seventh who was tagged for three runs and only recorded two outs.

He was replaced by Cody Dobson who gave up a bases loaded double to score all three runs, all charged to Zuber.

The Coyotes responded in the eight with a pair of runs on four singles by Frederick Bello, Hanson, Hill and Good.

With the score 8-6, San Bernardino added an insurance run in the eighth and retired Cerro Coso in the ninth without any additional runs begin scored.

Adams noted that despite having four batters in double-figure hits — Sayas, Bello and Hanson went 2-5 and Hill went 2-3 — the base knocks weren’t being produced by the rest of the line up, which led to so many men left on base.

“We just had some holes in our lineup,” Adams said.

Among the hit leaders, Hill drove two in while scoring a run of his own. Hanson also recorded an RBI and came across the dish twice. Sayas and Bello both scored a run.

Rounding out the hitting was Good who went 1-4 with an RBI.

Cerro Coso will host the same Wolverines on Saturday in a double header. The first game will begin at noon at the Dawg Yard.

Scheduled for the Coyotes in the first game will be Kyle Tullis followed by Brett Cobbley in the second.

Both games will be broadcast on KWDJ 1360 AM.
