Cerro Coso stumbles in early innings

By Cheeto Barrera, Sports Editor, The Daily Independent

“We need one of our most experienced sophomore pitchers to start producing if we’re going to get back in this.”

Despite a solid pitching performance for six innings, nine runs in two were all that College of the Desert needed to defeat Cerro Coso 9-4 on Thursday.

Jessie Zuber was taken out after one and a third innings, giving up nine runs, eight earned, on six hits and a walk.

“This is the third Thursday in a row that he hasn’t won,” said coach Dick Adams. “We need one of our most experienced sophomore pitchers to start producing if we’re going to get back in this.”

Relievers Colby Ingram, Ryan Gorzitze and Clint Williamson combined for four hits in five and two thirds innings, walking one and striking out five.

The Coyote bats gave it their all, but a stingy pitching performance from Desert’s pitchers as well as a couple of defensive plays, kept the offense from turning the tide on the game.

Cerro Coso put up goose eggs on the board through seven innings before a four run explosion in the eighth inning.

With one out and a runners on first and second, Mark Sayas hit a shot to the third baseman who threw the ball away trying to turn a double play. The error allowed Frederick Bello to score from second to break the shutout.

Ryan Fisher followed with a single that drove in Cody Reiger.

Fisher was later knocked in by Joe Amato with two outs. The final run was scored when Kyle Hanson walked with the bases loaded to bring Jon Proesl across the plate.

With the bases still loaded and two outs, Bello came to bat for the second time in the inning and hit a shot between the third baseman and the shortstop. Unfortunately, the shortstop was able to get a glove on the ball and tossed it to third for the final out in the inning.

Sayas led the hitters, going 2-5 with a double followed by Reiger who went 2-4.

The Coyotes fall to 4-6 (10-16) in Foothill Conference play, after splitting a double header over the weekend with Antelope Valley.

Cerro Coso will face off against Desert again on Saturday in a double header starting at 1 p.m.

Ingram and Fisher will get the nod to take the hill in the two games.

Both games will air on KWDJ 1360 AM.
