and was able to keep a runner on third from scoring. |
Things looked to be going so for Cerro Coso heading into the eighth
inning.
The Coyotes had survived an early bump in the road to go up 7-6 in the
fourth inning and eventually extended the lead to 10-7 in the eighth.
Hoping to put the game away, and put a serious hurt on the second place
Roadrunners in the Foothill Conference, coach Dick Adams brought in his
closer Tyler McAllister to get the final six outs.
Rio Hondo had different ideas — 15 different ideas to be exact.
The Roadrunners put a 15 spot on the board to win 22-11 on Tuesday.
McAllister got knocked out after giving up three hits and five walks to
blow the save opportunity before being yanked for Kyle Tullis.
In all Adams went through five pitchers before three outs were recorded.
And by the time the dust settled, the Coyotes found themselves on the
short end of an 11-run route.
Adams said the Coyotes were not without their opportunities to bust the
game open.
After going down 5-0 in the third inning, Cerro Coso got one back in the
third then put up a four spot in the fourth inning started by a triple
by Cam Whitewith the bases loaded.
But further chances to score fell by the wayside.
“Since the (Mashin’ in the Mojave) tourney, we’re doing offensively
pretty good,” Adams said. “We were up 8-6 and we’re trying to sac bunt
but we fail sac bunt twice. If we got the sac bunt down, we would have
scored two runs maybe more. You never know what would have happened. We
should have been up 14-7. If we had, I think (Rio Hondo) would have had
a different personality.”
Cerro Coso committed six errors in the game, three coming in the first
four innings.
But the offense could have held on and was able to survive the mistakes
initially.
“We did a good job at coming back,” Adams said. “We were battling and we
were getting the lead but shooting ourselves in the foot by not getting
more runs and not putting them away.”
