Despite chance to be spoilers, Cerro Coso shelled by Panthers in 19-3 loss

By Cheeto Barrera, Sports Editor, The Daily Independent

“We’re looking to give them a much better game tomorrow.”

Tuesday was an opportunity for Cerro Coso to play the spoiler, but Chaffey had other ideas in a 19-3 loss.

Through the first four innings, the Coyotes trailed 12-1 as Chaffey kept things going with base hits and Cerro Coso errors.

Cerro Coso didn’t put a muzzle on Panthers until the fifth inning when Clint Williamson came in relief, yielding one run through three innings of work.

Coach Dick Adams said Williamson was the most effective pitcher of the day for Cerro Coso, noting that Chaffey scored six more times in their final offensive inning when Williamson was removed.

The Coyotes didn’t give up, trailing 19-1 in the bottom of the ninth, scoring two more runs before retiring to end the game.

Walks, hit batters and errors all spelled the end for Cerro Coso in the game, including throwing to the wrong base during a double play.

Chaffey now clinches no worse than a tie for first in the Foothill Conference, with second place Rio Hondo falling in the tie breaker should it complete a sweep against Antelope Valley College on Thursday and Chaffey falls to the Coyotes.

“We’re looking to give them a much better game tomorrow,” Adams said.

Big hitters on the day were Jon Proesl who went 2-4 with two doubles and Cody Rieger also going 2-4 with an RBI.

Cerro Coso now falls to 10-12 in conference play. A sweep today would bring them to .500, something that Adams would be happy to settle for.

Adams said he wishes the team could have won more at home, dropping six conference games at the Dawg Yard.

Cerro Coso will close out its season today in a double header at the Dawg Yard. The schedule was moved back to accommodate the Foothill playoff bound teams who will begin on Tuesday.
