The home opening weekend for Cerro Coso baseball saw two decided different styles of play, with the Coyotes splitting the first two of a three-game set with Diablo Valley.

Adam Garner pitched seven innings, but errors got the best of Coso in a 3-2 decision, and Garner got the loss in the first half of a Saturday double-header.

The visiting Vikings struck for runs in the first, second, and third innings, but were shutout the rest of the way.

Andrew Mosjc and Mark Sayas led off the rally in the fifth inning with a pair of singles, with Kyle Hanson’s sacrifice bunt advancing the pair into scoring position.

Jon Proesl’s at-bat yielded the first Coyote run, with Mosjc crossing home on the sac fly.

In the sixth, utility man Liam Tenant knocked in a run with a base hit to shallow right field.

The Coyote defense rewarded the offense with some nice play in the sixth and seventh.

Proesl cut off a DVC squeeze attempt to catch the runner at second, and later Hanson picked off an attempted Viking steal.

The Dawgs’ had a golden opportunity to get on the board in the fourth with the bases loaded and two outs, but Jason Pierce was caught looking for the strikeout.

The one-run loss was a measure of revenge for Diablo Valley.

The previous night’s encounter saw Coso come away with an 18-17 win in a shootout.

The Coyote catchers had a big night, with Hanson going 4-5 for two RBIS, while Kevin Orlowski hit for three RBIs on one hit.

Mosjc and Andrew Hill each hit triples in the win.

On the mound, Kade McAllister went 41/3 innings, giving up five earned runs on eight hits.

Ryan Short came on in relief and got the win, throwing six strikeouts in 22/3 innings, despite giving up 10 earned runs.

Felice Cammisuli preserved the lead and picked up the save.
