Having already faced Diablo Valley to two one-run decisions on the
weekend, Cerro Coso took the rubber match Saturday 9-8 in the series’
third game decided by a single run.
Coso (3-8) took a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning, but gave up five runs
in the fifth to fall behind 8-4.
“I commend the team for staying in the game,” said head coach Dick
Adams. “Once Diablo put up five, it took the wind out of us.”
The Coyotes found a second wind in the seventh, however, when Jason
Pierce blasted a two-run homer — the Dawgs’ first round-tripper of the
season — to cut the Diablo Valley lead in half.
Cameron White was on second after hitting a double when Pierce hit the
blast to left field.
“That put us in a situation to get close,” Adams said.
Once they were close, the Coyotes pounced in the eighth inning.
With Mark Sayas on base after a base hit, and Jon Proesl walked, Zack
Wilson knocked a two-strike single into right field to load the bases.
Mark Romero struck gold with two outs and the bases juiced, hitting one
into right center for two runs to force an 8-8 tie.
White came up big again, providing the game-winning RBI on the next at
bat.
The win was big for a Coso team that heads on its toughest road swing to
date this weekend.
The Coyotes travel to Mt. San Antonio Thursday before a two-game slate
Friday and Saturday in Palomar against Los Angeles Pierce and Palomar.
