Coyotes top Victor Valley in error-laden affair: Coso prevails 13-10 despite “sloppy play”

Cerro Coso and Victory Valley combined for 11 errors yesterday evening in a game CCCC head coach Dick Adams said was “played sloppy by both teams.”

But, errors or not, the Coyotes (15-17, 11-5 Foothill Conference) broke a three-game skid, topping the visiting Rams 13-10.

Though VVCC managed 10 runs on the game, Coso pitchers were tagged for just one earned run as a result of six Dawg errors.

Adam Garner started, giving up the only earned run, a solo home run in the first inning.

“Garner pitched effectively,” Adams said. “He was dominant like he usually is...but the defense didn’t play well behind him.”

Fortunately for Coso, while the defense was stumbling, the offense was striking.

The Coyotes put together big second and sixth runs, scoring seven and five in those stretches respectively.

The second inning outpouring saw the Coyotes bat 11-deep.

Andrew Masojc and Mark Sayas highlighted the inning with back-to-back RBI triples.

Sayas had a strong offensive day overall, batting 3-5, despite committing three errors defensively.

“The tribute to Sayas is a lot of guys [commit errors and] let that affect them at the plate,” Adams said.

Also contributing big at the plate was Dusty Romero. The second baseman connected for two base hits, and recorded an RBI on a well-executed squeeze bunt.

Andrew Hill added two more hits, and an RBI.

The loss douses the flame of a three-game losing streak for the Coyotes, and put them back in the hunt for one of the Foothill Conference’s top two spots.

The conference sends its top two finishers to the State Playoffs. Currently, Chaffey and Rio Hondo hold those positions.

Coso is scheduled to travel to Victor Valley for a doubleheader tomorrow. Debris on the field almost postponed the game, but the doubleheader will go ahead as scheduled.
