Coyotes take two from San Jac: Chaffey is final conference foe

Thirty Cerro Coso hits Saturday yielded 30 runs, as the Coyotes twice downed Mt. San Jacinto at the Dawg Yard.

Coso (21-20, 15-6 Foothill Conference) got the bats going for 10-3 and 20-9 wins in a pair of games head coach Dick Adams said had misleading scores.

“These were both close games until about midway through,” he said.

The Coyotes found all it takes to turn a tight game into a rout is a couple of big innings - and some big performances at the plate, like the one Jon Proesl put on.

He went 3-5 in game two with a pair of triples - good for half of his three-baggers on the day - and drove in six runs.

One of those triples came in a big Coso half of the sixth inning.

The two teams were deadlocked at eight, when CCCC scratched across seven runs, more than enough to seal the win for pitcher Jessie Zuber.

Cerro Coso managed five more in the eighth for good measure.

Aside from 18 hits, the Coyotes took advantage of seven MSJC errors and six base-on-balls.

“We got 13 freebies with 18 hits. We probably should have scored more runs than we did,” he said with a laugh.

Zuber pitched four innings in relief for starter Kade McAllister, giving up three runs on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

Starter McAllister went four innings, giving up six runs - four of them earned - with four strikeouts.

Offensively, Mark Sayas contributed to the hit parade with three hits in five at-bats, including an RBI and triple.

Kevin Orlowski went 3-4, driving in three runs and crossing the plate four times himself.

Andrew Masojc and Cody Reiger added two and three RBI respectively.

The seven-inning game one produced similar results for Adams' Coyotes.

The Dawgs got on the board early with three first inning runs.

Cameron White recorded an RBI with a sacrifice fly, and Masojc drove another in on a fielder's choice.

The visiting Eagles, playing without three team members who were serving a suspension for leaving the dugout in a Thursday game with Coso, clawed back to make it a one-run game in the third.

CCCC got those two runs back right away however, in the bottom third.

Proesl's triple set up a groundball RBI from White, an example of the “small ball” Adams said was integral to the Coyotes' wins.

“We executed so well,” he said.

Ryan Short took care of business on the mound, meanwhile, throwing five solid innings as he continues his rehabilitation from a sore elbow.

Short gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits and struck out five Eagle batters.

But his most important number, according to Adams, was zero - the number of walks he gave up on the afternoon.

Greg Byron came on in the sixth to close MSJC out with two scoreless innings.

At the plate, Proesl went 2-3 with three runs, two triples and an RBI. White batted in three runs.

Dusty Romero and Masojc each went 2-4.
