CCCC loses pair to Rustlers

A trio of bad innings cost Cerro Coso against Golden West over the
weekend, as the Coyotes dropped a doubleheader on the road.
Cerro Coso dropped the first game - a make up after a rain out on Friday
- 11-4 giving up six runs in two innings. The Coyotes gave up three runs
in the first inning of the second game en route to a 4-2 loss.
In game one, the Coyotes scored three runs in the top of the fifth to
tie the game t 3-3 before the Rustlers put up a two spot in the bottom
half of the inning and four runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Coyote pitcher Steve Johnson was tagged for nine runs on 10 hits and
four walks through five and one third innings. After giving up a one out
RBI double to Bill Nowlin, Johnson was pulled in favor of Ryan Gorzitze
who faced just two batters.
Gorzitze gave up a single and a double, allowing three runs to score -
two were charged to Johnson.
Ryan Fischer replaced Gorzitze, getting the next batters to fly out to
center and ground out to second.
Fischer went two and two thirds innings, giving up one run on one hit.
The lone run came in the bottom of the eighth on a balk after Fischer
loaded the bases on a single and two hit batters.
The Coyotes ended the game with three straight strike outs.
Leading the Cerro Coso hitting were Fred Bello and Mark Moriarty, each
with two RBIs. Bello went 2-3 with Moriarty going 1-4 on the day. They
were followed by Joe Keiser who went 2-3 with two runs and Anthony Dee
going 2-3 with a run scored.
In the second game, Eugene Wright struggled through the first, giving up
three runs on four hits. Wright gave up three consecutive singles for
Golden West's first run followed by a sacrifice fly with a runner on
third for the second.
With two outs, Wright gave up a triple to Michael Gil who scored on a
passed ball.
He gave up an unearned run in the third on a double by Nowlin scoring
Geno DeAngelis who reached on an error.
From that point, Wright scattered five hits over four innings, not
allowing another run.
He finished the game going seven full innings, with four runs (three
earned) on 10 hits two walks and struck out five.
Wes Oliver pitched a perfect eighth inning in relief, striking out a
batter.
After tallying three hits over four innings, the Coyotes put a two spot
on the board in the fifth inning.
Without recording a hit in the inning, Jake Smith and Josh Gust scored
on a bases loaded walk to Fred Bello and a fielder's choice,
respectively.
The rally was short lived when Moriarty grounded into a double play to
end the inning.
Over the next four innings, the Coyotes had three hits and had one
runner advance as far as second.
Leading the way for Cerro Coso was Smith who went 2-2 with a run scored.
The Coyotes will return home today to face Santa Barbara, with game time
scheduled for 1 p.m. Cerro Coso will begin Foothill Conference play this
week, with a three game stretch against College of the Desert, beginning
on the road Thursday and concluding Saturday with a doubleheader at
Cerro Coso.
