Defense and Darren Travers were all Cerro Coso needed against Victor
Valley on Thursday, coming away with a 13-0 win.
Travers threw a complete game, scattering nine hits, walking none and
striking out eight. And the couple of times he did get into jams,
including a bases loaded with one out in the sixth, he induced a double
play to get out of the inning.
“He just dominated them,” said coach Dick Adams. “He threw very, very
well. ... I think he got stronger as the game went on.”
Travers had an eight-pitch eighth inning, even with two strike outs. But
the Coyotes weren’t content with letting the defense hog all the glory.
They had 18 hits with 13 runs, led by Mark Moriarty who went 5-6 with
three runs, three RBIs and a three-bagger.
He was joined in the hitting barrage by Fred Bello, who went 3-5 with a
double and three runs scored, and T.J. Gale, who went 2-5 with a run
scored and four RBIs.
Rounding out the offensive day were Joe Keiser going 2-5 with two RBIs
and three runs scored and Franklin Romero, Jr., who went 2-6 with an
RBI.
“It was good to get the win and get back on the winning track,” Adams
said.
Cerro Coso will return home on Saturday for a doubleheader against
Victor Valley starting at 3 p.m.
Eugene Wright will get the nod in game one followed by Drew Firebaugh
making his first start of the season in game two.
