Coyotes come out on top in slug fest against San Bernardino Valley
By Cheeto Barrera, Sports Editor, The Daily Independent
Sometimes playing for pride is all you need.
Cerro Coso, already out of the playoff picture, survived a slobber
knocker against San Bernardino Valley, coming through with a clutch base
hit in the bottom of the eighth to win 12-11.
The Coyotes are now 21-21 trying to finish with a winning record,
needing to sweep to finish two games above .500. A split in San
Bernardino on Thursday will but them at 22-22.
Antony Dee came through with the game winning RBI as three runners came
across the plate to put Cerro Coso up by the final margin.
Wes Oliver took the win, after initially blowing the save in the eighth,
allowing four runs to score. He then came back in the top of the ninth
and shut down the Wolverine hitters.
Darren Travers, pitching on short rest, threw five strong innings,
giving up four earned runs, and was pulled after he reached 85 pitches.
Coach Dick Adams wanted to leave Travers with an opportunity to win the
game and not kill his arm.
Fred Bello led the offensive charge on a blustery day, going 4-5 with
three RBIs.
T.J. Gale and Keith Gerber each went 2-4, with Gale driving in three
runs and Gerber driving in two.
Adams credited his defense with some solid play on the day, noting that
the Wolverines have the highest team batting average in the Foothill
Conference.
Cerro Coso now has a 12-10 conference record and could finish in fourth
with a sweep against San Bernardino and could even end up in third if
College of the Desert is swept by Rio Hondo on Thursday.
Game time in San Bernardino is scheduled for noon in the doubleheader.
Both games will be broadcast on 1360 AM KWDJ or on the Web at
www.foxtalk1360.com.
