Mark Moriarty, right fielder from Cerro Coso, was named the Foothill
Conference Most Valuable Player this week, leading a list of seven
Coyotes named to the all conference team.
Moriarty led the conference in Batting (.546), hits (53), RBI (35). He
had seven doubles, two triples, two home runs and stole 12 bases out of
17 attempts.
Last spring, Moriarty, who hails from Chicago, e-mailed Coach Dick Adams
with interest in Cerro Coso.
As fate would have it, Coach Adams and his daughter Meghann, had a
vacation planned that took them through Chicago. He called Moriarty and
set up a visit.
The rest his just history as Mark becomes the eighth baseball player to
be named Conference Player of the Year in Cerro Coso Coso's 16-year
history.
Adams was at a loss for words.
“Wow,” said Coach Adams when asked about his lucky find. “Some things
are just meant to be. Who knows why this happened? I have my belief, I
am sure many others have the same belief.”
The fact that Cerro Coso has players from around the country is nothing
new.
Other players joining Moriarty on the first team are Fredrick Bello,
sophomore shortstop (Dominican Republic) .439 BA, had 18 stolen bases
out of as many attempts, and Darren Travers freshman pitcher 4-2 record,
4.21 ERA and 34 strikeouts (Elko, Nev.), Second team players include:
Eugene Wright, freshman pitcher 3-4 record, 4.21 ERA and 35 K's
(Portland, Ore.), Franklin Romero, freshmen outfielder .351 BA, four
triples, 10 of 13 in stolen bases (Dominican Republic).
Cerro Coso had two players named Honorable Mention, Steve Johnson,
sophomore pitcher (Denver) and T.J. Gale, freshman DH (Salt Lake City).
