The Annual Cerro Coso summer basketball camp is in full swing this week, with more than 60 boys and girls participating in the week-long camp.

Players from across the High Desert and beyond came together Saturday to take part in the Cerro Coso Summer Tournament.

Nine teams turned out for the two-day affair, starting with practice rounds on Friday and continuing through Saturday morning.

Two of the teams joined forces to even out the bracket. Teams included squads from Burroughs, Barstow, Rosamond, Littlerock High School and Beatty High School.

The Cerro Coso summer tournament got started on Friday, with a game between the Burroughs freshmen team and Big Pine. There were four games played on Friday, including two by the Burros.

Mid-summer tourney coming Friday

Cerro Coso College will be hosting its annual mid-summer high school girls basketball tournament Friday and Saturday.

The two-day tournament will be played at Cerro Coso and Burroughs High School.

The games will begin on Friday afternoon at the college and will continue all day Saturday at both sites.

Though season was frustrating, Coyotes finish strong

The 2007-2008 Cerro Coso women's basketball season was not the worst Tom Heck has had in his seven-year tenure, but at times it turned his hair even whiter than it already is.

Facing the year in, year out battle of bringing talent to Ridgecrest and keeping them healthy, Heck at times could only suit up five players. He started with 10 players, but had that number quickly pared down to seven by the midway point and eventually down to six by the end of the season.

The injury bug, one scholarship winner and one player leaving for personal reasons left the Coyotes with a minimal roster to go up against one of the toughest conferences in the state - having five teams ranked at one time or another.

'We nearly had a Hoosiers movie in Ridgecrest'

With 22 seconds on the clock and trailing by one, Cerro Coso went to a trap defense against Rio Hondo to keep the game within reach. The trap worked as Felicia Miller came up with a steal and drove down the court trailed by three Rio Hondo players.

Miller was forced to kick out and the ball was passed around until it found the hands of Sheerena Gene - the Coyotes' best shooter on the day. Twice Gene went up under the rim and twice the ball bounced off, the second time Rio Hondo rebounded with five seconds left on the clock.

Coyotes battle, but fall 58-51 to Southwestern

Taking a break from conference play, the Cerro Coso women’s basketball team fell 58-51 to Southwestern from Arizona on Wednesday.

Despite one of their most solid rebound days this season, the Coyotes’ shots failed to fall and held the lead just three times. After opening the game with a 3-pointer from Mariah Bomberry, Cerro Coso quickly fell behind 10-5 before catching back up in midway though the period and taking the lead twice (15-12 and 19-17) but Southwestern went on a 10-2 scoring run and never looked back.

Turnovers plague Coyotes against Antelope Valley

Cerro Coso women's basketball coach Tom Heck said his team played one of its best defensive games when it took on Antelope Valley College on Monday, despite losing 65-33.

For the first six minutes of the game, the Coyotes (6-14 overall, 0-11 in the Foothill Conference) held AVC (14-12, 7-3) to two points before the Marauder athleticism took over and turned it into the 32-point game at the end.

Coyote shots don't fall in 71-44 loss to Eagles

It took a little while for Cerro Coso's offense to get rolling, but it wasn't for lack of trying.

Head Coach Tom Heck said despite losing to Mt. San Jacinto 71-44, it was one of the Lady Coyotes' best offensive nights.

“It didn't look like it the first half. We had some decent shots, we just didn't make them and we don't get many second chances - ever,” Heck said. “...Offensively we had some great cuts and some great looks, we just couldn't score. Our shot selection wasn't bad, just nothing would drop.”

‘We just ran out of gas': Coyotes lose by 20 after solid first half against No. 8 Chaffey

Cerro Coso women's basketball coach Tom Heck is wishing his games could be shorter.

In Saturday's 74-54 loss to Chaffey (19-5 overall, 7-2 in the Foothill Conference), the 20-point margin didn't appear until the very end of the game, and most of the way the Lady Coyotes (6-11 overall, 0-8 in the Foothill) kept the deficit to less than double digits.
It wasn't until about the 10-minute mark of the second half did the game start getting out of hand. But, as Heck points out, he has seven girls to go up against the athletic, No. 8 ranked team in Southern California.

Lack of size, depth, sink Coyotes, 60-41

After a holiday hiatus, the Cerro Coso Women’s basketball team resumed play on Saturday, dropping a 60-41 decision to Mt. San Jacinto College.

San Jacinto (11-5) used its height and depth advantage against the Lady Coyotes (5-8), diminishing shooting opportunities and dominating the boards, 48-26.

Several of the rebounds came as scoring putbacks on the offensive boards.

Lady Coyotes split final two games of Nor Cal trip

Cerro Coso wrapped up its Northern California tour on Wednesday, taking out Marin 70-42 after losing a thriller to Cabrillo the night before 68-67.

Head Coach Tom Heck said the Tuesday game against Cabrillo in Santa Cruz was perhaps one of the best women’s basketball games he’s ever seen.

“It was just a great game with two teams just even as can be,” Heck said. “They just had a little more depth than us. They were able to create more rebounds than us, which ultimately hurt us. But our kids played hard, we just had some bad luck at the end.”

Coyotes take two of three in tournament

Though Cerro Coso has been struggling for wins of late, the Lady Coyotes took two out of three games at the College of Redwood Tournament over the weekend.

Cerro Coso (4-6) defeated Victor Valley College 60-47 in the consolation championship on Monday, carried by Sherena Gene’s 17 points and Mariah Bomberry’s double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds.

Lady Coyotes suffer fourth straight loss

Cerro Coso’s losing streak was extended to four games with a 77-54 loss to Rio Hondo on Tuesday.

The Lady Coyotes now hold a 1-4 overall record and are 0-2 in Foothill Conference play. Rio Hondo improves to 8-4 overall, according to its Web site.

Cerro Coso found itself flat through most of the game, shooting 3-22 from beyond the arc. The Roadrunners, however made two third of their shots from the field.

Turn overs cost Cerro Coso large lead against Desert

The Cerro Coso women’s basketball team dropped its third straight game, falling 63-58 to College of the Desert after blowing a large first half lead.

The Coyotes held a 32-9 lead at the 2:20 mark in the first half. And from that time through the rest of the game, Cerro Coso committed 29 turnovers and was out scored 54-26 for the rest of the game.

Starting at the 2:20 mark until half time, College of the Desert went on a 12-0 scoring run.

Sans Cantrell, CCCC falls 69-63

Missing one of its starting players, the Cerro Coso women’s basketball team fell to West Los Angeles 69-63 on Tuesday in a game featuring missed chances and too many turnovers.

After trailing by six at the half, the Coyotes went up by the same margin midway through the second frame.

Turnovers, including three in a row, erased the lead and gave the Oilers the final margin of victory.

All that missing Brenda Cantrell, who missed the game following an accident over the weekend. Head Coach Tom Heck expects the sophomore guard and Burroughs graduate to miss at least a week.

Lady Coyotes return to the court facing an uphill Foothill Conference battle

After losing key players to injuries, transfers, Heck must do battle with five teams ranked in top five in So. Cal.

The Cerro Coso women’s basketball team will open the 2007-2008 season Monday at 5 p.m., hosting San Diego City College at the Ray McCue Activity Center.

The Coyotes are returning six players from last year, joined by four new freshmen.

Coach Tom Heck returns for his seventh season at the helm of Cerro Coso and said he hopes to keep his team healthy — something that has plagued his program in the past.

Coyotes fall in season’s first Foothill match

“For us, I’m not sure if we could have played better.”

Despite a hard-nosed effort out of his ladies, Tom Heck’s Cerro Coso women’s basketball team could not find an answer for the hard-nosed play out of Chaffey on Wednesday, losing 73-51.

The loss drops the Coyotes to 1-1 for the season and 0-1 in the Foothill Conference.

“I was pleased with our intensity, hustle and defense,” Heck said. “I thought we executed as well as we could. We went on a couple of dry spells in the first half.”

The Panthers jumped out to a 12-point lead at half-time and dominated on the boards and the free throw line.

Coyote rout becomes slugfest

“We kept our composure and we didn’t play selfish.”

Cerro Coso opened its women’s basketball season with a 67-54 win over San Diego City College on Friday, but getting there was an adventure.

The Lady Coyotes spotted San Diego City eight points to begin the game, before going on a 29-10 run the rest of the first half. Early in the second half, Cerro Coso built a 14 point lead before the Knights (0-4) made another scoring run midway through the second to pull within three.

Head Coach Tom Heck had benched some of his starters for disciplinary reasons, which he attributed to some of the run that San Diego City went on.

Basketball camp offers fun and games, with a bit of learning on the side

The Cerro Coso women’s basketball program is holding its second camp of the summer, this time directed at the girls, with a handful of boys who joined the ranks.

Nearly 30 children signed up for the camp, with a few dropping off by Tuesday, the second day of the camp.

“They seem to be enjoying themselves,” said camp director Tom Heck. “They seem to be smiling a lot. I hope they’re learning basketball fundamentals in the mix of it all.”

The participants took part in drills and games designed to help give them a better understanding of the game.

Camp teaching youths basketball skills

Throughout most of the day at the Cerro Coso boys basketball camp, the three coaches were trying their best to get the kids to cheer or clap to support each other.

It seemed that it only took a five-on-three contest with the campers facing off against the coaches in a first-to-three match.

Each time the campers made a basket, the cheers went up, echoing through the Coyote gym. And each time the coaches scored, a rendition of boos followed.

Palmdale, N. Bakersfield take CC tourney

RIDGECREST — Palmdale High School and the North Bakersfield High School junior varsity girls basketball squads came out the big winners on Saturday, taking the annual Cerro Coso girls high school basketball tournament.

Cerro Coso basketball coach and tournament director Tom Heck said he was pleased with the competition, turnout and help he received running the tournament.

“There were some great, close games in both (the small school and large school) divisions, and it sure seemed that everyone got their money’s worth,” Heck said.

Former Burroughs coach joins Coyotes

Cerro Coso College women’s basketball coach Tom Heck announced that former Burroughs High School girls basketball coach Kurt Menard will be joining the program as an assistant coach.

Menard spent 10 years as Burroughs’ head coach winning several league title and left in 2004. He is still a math teacher at Burroughs.
