Cerro Coso was led by freshman Fernanda Yazzie, who went 0-for-12
Saturday night at Chaffey but found her scoring touch in a major way
Wednesday, lighting up the Vikings for 33 points, coming on 11
three-point shots.
"Fernanda went nuts," said Coyotes Head Coach Tom Heck. "She had 11
three-pointers; and she made some of those in zone, and some of those in
man-to-man defense."
The Coyotes jumped out to an early lead and cruised through most of the
game, leading by as many as 23 points with 7:30 to go. The Vikings
closed the margin with a strong full-court press, and the Coyotes hung
on for the win.
"They were pressing us to death at the end," said Heck. "We survived -
this was a good win for us."
According to Heck, the outburst from Yazzie is a high point for the
Coyotes, at least in his three-year tenure.
"She just shot the lights out," added Heck. "Give credit to Frederica
Morgan for doing a good job of getting the ball out of the post and back
to Fernanda."
Morgan, despite playing with a foot injury that has plagued her all
season, scored 20 points and 17 rebounds. The sophomore also added seven
blocks.
Amy Rucker added 10 points for the Coyotes, who improved to 14-8 overall
and 8-4 in conference play.
Emma James and Jacklyn Belin added three points each to round out the
scoring.
Cerro Coso will face Mt. San Jacinto College Saturday night, and will
face Antelope Valley Wednesday to close out the season.
