Cerro Coso splits a weekend pair at Cuyamaca Tournament
By Nathan Ahle, The Daily Independent
The Cerro Coso Coyotes women's basketball team won one of its two games
this weekend at the Cuyamaca Tournament in San Diego.
The Coyotes got the weekend off to a good start with a 58-44 win over
Mt. San Jacinto College. Cerro Coso's half-court trap was the key to
success in the win, according to Head Coach Tom Heck.
Frederica Morgan and Emma James led all scorers with 20 points each,
with Amy Rucker adding 10 points for the locals.
Cerro Coso had a 25-point lead over the Eagles in the middle of the
second half.
However, Mt. San Jacinto's full-court press caused the Coyotes problems
with turnovers, but the team was able to rally to win.
Saturday afternoon, the team lost the championship game to L.A. City
College, falling 71-57.
The Coyotes led most of the first half, but Heck felt that poor
perimeter shooting made the difference in the game.
"They just had a little too much depth for us, but give them credit,"
said Heck. "They really ran the floor well down the stretch; they got a
few fast-break points."
Cerro Coso is now 4-2 on the season, and the team will host a New Year's
tournament Dec. 29 and 30. The Coyots will host Citrus College at 7 p.m.
on the 29th, and the tournament's championship game is Dec. 30 at 3 p.m.
