The Cerro Coso Lady Coyotes basketball team battled a tough opponent
from Victor Valley College Wednesday night at Cerro Coso, losing 69-53
to fall to 1-4 on the young season.
The two teams battled evenly through the first half, with Coso down by
six. Cerro Coso kept the deficit close throughout much of the second
half, trailing 39-33 with 14:18 to go.
However, an 11-0 run by Victor Valley over the next four minutes
extended the margin to 50-33, sinking the Coyotes' hopes.
The Coyotes fought back at the end, but it was too little, too late.
"We hustled, and made a nice comeback at the end," said Coyotes Head
Coach Tom Heck. "We just got killed inside."
Candace Poleyestewa led Coso in scoring with 15 points, followed by
Tasheena Nelson's 13 and Stephanie Hart's eight-point effort. Cetra
Banks added seven, and Orlanda Chee and Fernanda Yazzie rounded out the
Cerro Coso scoring with three points each.
"It's going to take a perfect game for us to win in conference play this
year," Heck said. "We have to play well inside, play good defense and
stay out of foul trouble."
Cerro Coso will try to earn its second win of the season tonight, when
it hosts Cuyamaca College at 5:30 p.m. at the Raymond A. McCue Athletic
Complex. Admission is free. Cerro Coso will be on the road all of next
week before beginning conference play on Dec. 16 against the Rio Hondo
College Roadrunners at Cerro Coso.
