The Cerro Coso Coyotes women's basketball team is playing its best basketball of the season.

Cerro Coso (6-7, 3-1 Foothill) won its second straight game Wednesday night in Barstow, routing the Barstow College Vikings 71-44.

The Coyotes jumped out early and cruised, leading 43-19 at halftime, thanks to solid three-point shooting and a strong defense. Coso employed a 1-2-2 zone defense against Barstow.

"We kept great pressure on the ball, and were forcing turnovers," said Cerro Coso Head Coach Tom Heck. "It was our best defensive effort of the season using our half-court trap."

Fernanda Yazzie was the top scorer for Cerro Coso, hitting nine three-pointers to finish with 27 points. Cetra Banks added 13 points and 15 rebounds, with Candace Poleyestewa and Orlanda Chee scoring eight points each. Stephanie Hart (seven points), Tashena Nelson (six points) and Jaime Donaldson (two points) rounded out Cerro Coso's scoring.

"We shot better tonight from the perimeter," said Heck, "but we still need to find a way to score more inside."

The Coyotes connected on 14 of 25 shots from outside the three-point line.

Another major positive for the Coyotes came on the glass, where Barstow outrebounded Cerro Coso 36-35, a big plus for a smaller Coyote team.

"We were only outrebounded by one; that's the closest we've been all year," Heck said. "That's a positive for us."

Cerro Coso is in the middle of a five-game road swing that continues Monday against College of the Desert. The team's next home game is against Chaffey College on Jan. 24 at 7 p.m.
