Battling the second-ranked women's basketball team in the state, the
Cerro Coso Coyotes were unable to make anything happen against the
Antelope Valley College Marauders Saturday afternoon in Lancaster,
losing 79-39.
The 19-1 Marauders were simply too much for Cerro Coso (6-10, 3-3
Foothill) on the glass, outrebounding the Coyotes 52-26.
However, offensive woes also doomed the Coyotes. Cerro Coso connected on
only two of 28 field-goal attempts in the first half, and finished the
game with a 12-for-52 clip.
"The only thing I was disappointed in is that we couldn't hit many
shots," Cerro Coso Head Coach Tom Heck said. "They (AVC) are just so
strong inside."
Fernanda Yazzie led Cerro Coso in scoring with 11 points, followed by
Cetra Banks with seven and Stephanie Hart with five.
AVC's Claire Randel, who has the potential to play Division I
basketball, scored 25 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the team.
"In my opinion, they're the number-one team in the state," Heck said.
Cerro Coso will complete its five-game road swing this week, with games
against Mt. San Jacinto Wednesday and San Bernardino Valley College on
Saturday. The team's next home game is Jan. 24 against Chaffey College.
