The Cerro Coso Coyotes women's basketball team nearly stole a win on the
road Wednesday against Mt. San Jacinto, losing what Head Coach Tom Heck
called a "gut-wrenching" 46-45 decision.
The Coyotes (6-11, 3-4 Foothill) started slowly, connecting on only one
of their first 13 shots before taking off on a 7-0 run to even the score
at 21-21 at halftime.
Both teams battled back and forth in the second half, with Cerro Coso
opening a four-point lead with 22 seconds left. However, Kim Bottini and
Denise Funches combined to rally for five quick points, including a
Bottini shot with five seconds left that became the game-winner.
"It was a good game between two evenly matched teams," said Heck. "Give
San Jacinto credit; they've been involved in a lot of close games this
year and know it's not over until it's over."
"When you hold a team to 46 and lose, it's quite disappointing," Heck
added.
Fernanda Yazzie led Cerro Coso with 24 points, followed by Stephanie
Hart with 12 and Cetra Banks with six points and 14 rebounds.
The Coyotes were hampered by the loss of starting guard Tashena Nelson
to the flu. However, Jaime Donaldson started for the first time this
season, and Heck was pleased with her effort.
The team will travel to face San Bernardino Valley College Saturday
night.
