The Cerro Coso Community College women's basketball program is hard at
work this week, holding one of the final sports camps of the summer at
the college's Raymond A. McCue Athletic Complex.
Led by Cerro Coso women's coach Tom Heck, the camp is well-attended,
with 38 campers in session.
"We had a pretty good number of kids turn out," said Heck.
The girls' camp is very similar to the boys' camp the college put on
earlier in the summer. Heck and a staff of volunteer assistants teach
the students basketball fundamentals, including passing, dribbling, and
offensive and defensive strategies.
On Tuesday morning, the campers were found focusing on ball-control
strategies.
"This morning we've worked on jump-stops, crossovers, pivoting, and
things like that,"
Heck said.
Students also worked on rebounding, with coaches providing passes and
taking shots at the rim, which the campers would them try to rebound
while Heck offered individual instruction.
Following drills, the campers participated in a scrimmage game.
Volunteers helping Heck with the camp include Kevin Spargo, Kevin
Longmire, and Lady Coyote basketball player Brenda Cantrell.
