A strong second half was the difference Wednesday night in a 76-55 Cerro
Coso women’s basketball win over Foothill Conference challenger, San
Bernardino Valley.
The Lady Coyotes (15-6, 4-3 Foothill Conference) shook a 35-30 halftime
deficit and abismal 19 percent shooting from the floor with a 17-4 run
to begin the second half, and never looked back.
“We weren’t in foul trouble and we knew we had to change the tempo and
take chances,” said Cerro Coso head coach Tom Heck. “Fortunately, it
worked tonight”
Coso applied a halfcourt trap after the intermission, and the result was
numerous forced Lady Wolverine turnovers.
Heck said he was pleased with his team’s defensive effort, which yielded
just 20 SBVC points in the second half.
The renewed defensive pressure helped the Lady Coyotes’ offense get back
on track. Coso picked up its field goal percentage to 55 in the second
20 minutes, en route to a 46-point effort for the half.
Four Coyotes scored in double figures, led by forward Mariah Bomberry’s
20 points. Angel Lash dropped in 18, with Paris Allen contributing 16
and Stephanie Hart chipping in 12.
Ebbony Moses and Darschelle Lynch rounded out Coso’s scoring, scoring
six and four respectively.
The Lady Coyotes ability to play an uptempo game despite suiting up only
seven players was partially a result of San Bernardino Valley also
lacking reserves, Heck said.
“We played a team with the same depth problems as us for a change,” he
said. “Depth has been a problem for us.”
Four Coyotes are out for the duration of the season with injuries.
Cerro Coso gets a week to rest before resuming its conference schedule
Jan. 25 at Victor Valley College. The Lady Coyotes return home Jan. 28
for a date with Chaffey.
