“Intense - very intense,” was the way Cerro Coso head coach Tom Heck
described the Lady Coyotes 66-65 win Wednesday night at Mt. San Jacinto.
Coso (19-6, 8-3 Foothill Conference) fended off a last ditch effort for
the third time in four games.
With Mt. San Jacinto leading 65-63, Mariah Bomberry nailed a 3-pointer
with 55 seconds left in regulation.
The Lady Eagles missed on the other end, and Coso retained possession.
MSJ fouled, but CCCC lost the ensuing inbounds pass when an offensive
foul gave possession right back to the Lady Eagles.
Farriah Fuentes of MSJ took the final shot, an off-balance jumper from
eight feet out, that caught rim and fell off.
A near-packed house, on hand for the double-header with the Mt. San
Jacinto men playing the second game, made for a “fun” environment.
“With a minute left in the game, I told our kids that this is fun,” Heck
said. “This is what competition should be.”
Bomberry led all scorers wtih 25 points, in addition to pulling down 12
rebounds.
Paris Allen added 15 points and nine rebounds, with Angel Lash and
Stephanie Hart chipping in nine apiece.
Dar’Shelle Lynch rounded out the Lady Coyotes’ scoring efforts with
eight points.
With the win, Coso inches ever-closer to its postseason goal.
Three teams — Coso, Barstow, and Antelope Valley — remain in the
Foothill Conference hunt. Ony the top two advance to the playoffs.
Coso has a great chance to further its aspirations Monday night when it
hosts Antelope Valley at 7 p.m., at Cerro Coso College.
