A 50-point second half was more than enough yesterday for Cerro Coso to
defeat Cuyamaca 70-56 in the 2006-’07 season opener.
Forward Angel Lash scored 27 points to supplement an offense that in the
first 20 minutes struggled.
The Lady Coyotes trailed 28-26 at halftime after a 5-for-20 shooting
stretch.
Head coach Tom Heck said he had “mixed feelings” about his team’s play.
“We did a better job of finishing in the second half,” he said.
While the offense started to click in the second half, so did the
defense, thanks to changes in the team’s scheme.
Heck implemented box-and-one and triangle-and-two sets that stifled
Cuyamaca’s attempts at penetration.
“The defensive changes seemed to stop several of their players,” Heck
said.
An area of concern according to the CCCC coach, is rebounding.
“We’ll have to rebound much better to compete against the bigger teams
in [the Foothill Conference,]” he said.
Ashley Logan and Dara’shelle Lynch supplemented the offense with 17 and
11 points respectively.
Lynch and Brenda Cantrell were instrumental in the defense according to
Heck.
The Lady Coyotes return to action tomorrow, taking on Victor Valley on
the road in a non-conference affair.
