Continuing their early-season road swings, the Cerro Coso Lady Coyotes
basketball team brought home the consolation championship at the Los
Angeles Pierce Tournament over the weekend.
The Coyotes grabbed the consolation bracket title with a 61-53 win over
Citrus College Sunday afternoon.
Coyotes coach Tom Heck credited solid defense in the second half to grab
the win.
“We got off to a rocky start, hitting only two of our first 15 shots,
and we couldn’t stop their very talented post player. In the second half
we warmed up offensively and went into our box and one, doubling the
post player and taking her out of the mix,” Heck said.
Dara’shelle Lynch and Angel Lash led Cerro Coso in scoring, and Heck
credited Lynch’s defense. He also had praise for Ashley Logan.
The Coyotes earned their place in the consolation final with a 75-58
rout of L.A. City College Saturday. Cerro Coso led by nine at the
intermission and pulled away in the second half with a full-court press.
Cerro Coso dropped its tournament opener 55-52 to the host L.A. Valley
team on Friday, missing several chances to tie the game in the final
minutes.
Heck gave credit to team members Brenda Cantrell, Kaylina Abeyta,
Lynette Dineyazhe, LaShonda Jones, and Felicia Miller for the efforts in
the tournament. The coach also said that Antoinette Tyson came off the
bench against Citrus and played well.
The 4-2 Coyotes play in a non-conference game at Oxnard Thursday
evening.
