Lady Coyotes take consolation crown

By The Daily Independent Staff Reporter

“This was a battle of internal fortitude...”

Tim Allen

EUREKA — The Lady Coyotes won the Consolation Championship of the College of the Redwoods Tournament Sunday by going 2-1 in the weekend-long event. They also added a victory over Cabrillo College Monday night to run their record to 11-4 on the year.

Cerro Coso’s win Sunday highlighted the weekend, as they trailed Mendacino College for 38 minutes before turning the tables on their opponents and claiming the win.

“This was a battle of internal fortitude,” said sixth-year head coach Tom Heck. “Everything seemed to go against us, but we just kept fighting back and it paid off.”

One thing that went against the Lady Coyotes was Felicia Miller going down with a severe ankle injury and who will be lost indefinitely. Miller had been playing in place of starting point guard Brenda Cantrell, who went down last week with a similar injury.

Cerro Coso also lost starters Kaylina Abeyta and Dar’Shelle Lynch early in the second half when they fouled out.

That left the bulk of the burden to be placed on Angel Lash, who delivered 27 points and 14 rebounds in the victory. Lash was eventually named to the All-Tournament Team.

The locals opened the tournament Friday with a loss to eventual champion Las Positas College, 61-49. They then bounced back with a 65-52 win over Los Medanos College. Lash again led the Lady Coyotes with 28 points while Lynch added 23 in the latter contest.

Cerro Coso closed out the 2006 portion of its schedule with an 88-53 win over Cabrillo on the road in Santa Cruz Monday. Balance in the scoring column was the ticket for the Lady Coyotes with Abeyta and Ashley Logan each netting 16, followed by Lynch and Cash with 12 apiece. Lashonda Jones rounded out the double-figure scoring with 11.

Cerro Coso will resume play Jan. 6 in a non-conference game against Los Angeles Harbor at 2 p.m., before traveling to College of the Desert Jan. 8 for a 5 p.m. start in Foothill Conference play.
