RIDGECREST — Palmdale High School and the North Bakersfield High School
junior varsity girls basketball squads came out the big winners on
Saturday, taking the annual Cerro Coso girls high school basketball
tournament.
Cerro Coso basketball coach and tournament director Tom Heck said he was
pleased with the competition, turnout and help he received running the
tournament.
“There were some great, close games in both (the small school and large
school) divisions, and it sure seemed that everyone got their money’s
worth,” Heck said.
In the large school division, Palmdale rebounded after dropping its
first two games and defeated North Bakersfield in the final. In the
semifinals, Palmdale had to survive to take a one-point victory against
the Phoenix All Stars.
In the small school division, the North Bakersfield Junior Varsity
defeated the Rosamond Junior Varsity. North had to survive perhaps what
was the most thrilling game of the day, defeating Lee Vining High School
by two points in sudden death, after the game remained tied through an
overtime period.
Burroughs varsity advanced as far as the semifinals before losing to
North Bakersfield. The JV squad also got to within one game of the
championship before falling by one point to Lee Vining.
