Despite a hard-nosed effort out of his ladies, Tom Heck’s Cerro Coso
women’s basketball team could not find an answer for the hard-nosed play
out of Chaffey on Wednesday, losing 73-51.
The loss drops the Coyotes to 1-1 for the season and 0-1 in the Foothill
Conference.
“I was pleased with our intensity, hustle and defense,” Heck said. “I
thought we executed as well as we could. We went on a couple of dry
spells in the first half.”
The Panthers jumped out to a 12-point lead at half-time and dominated
on the boards and the free throw line.
Cerro Coso shot 6-20 from the line to Chaffey’s 18-23.
Heck also noted the Panthers had a few lucky breaks.
“They really rebounded well,” Heck said. “Chaffey was fortunate,
though, they had a lot of loose balls that they got by luck of the
bounce and not by hustle.”
Leading the way for the Coyotes was Brenda Cantrell who had 12 points.
She was followed by Samantha Harrison with 11 and Jacque Marshall with
10. Rounding out the scoring was Mariah Bomberry with 9.
“We tried to hang around, and we’ll get better,” Heck said. “For us, I’m
not sure if we could have played better.”
Cerro Coso will hit the road again on Tuesday to take on West L.A.
College with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
