Sans Cantrell, CCCC falls 69-63

By Cheeto Barrera, Sports Editor, The Daily Independent

“I think if we had had Brenda, we would have won,”

Missing one of its starting players, the Cerro Coso women’s basketball team fell to West Los Angeles 69-63 on Tuesday in a game featuring missed chances and too many turnovers.

After trailing by six at the half, the Coyotes went up by the same margin midway through the second frame.

Turnovers, including three in a row, erased the lead and gave the Oilers the final margin of victory.

All that missing Brenda Cantrell, who missed the game following an accident over the weekend. Head Coach Tom Heck expects the sophomore guard and Burroughs graduate to miss at least a week.

“I think if we had had Brenda, we would have won,” Heck said, noting she might have been able to control the number of turnovers the Coyotes committed during the game.

Cerro Coso falls to 1-2 on the season while West L.A. improves to 4-1.

The Coyotes were led by sophomore Sherena Gene who downed 18 points followed by Samantha Harrison with 16 and Jacque Marshall with 15.

Despite the numbers, Cerro Coso was out manned on the boards, allowing 22 points by way of the second effort.

The Coyotes also got into foul trouble, giving the Oilers 39 shots from the line, of which they sank 25.

Heck said his players dodged a bullet as the result of a score board malfunction, which then hindered the ability to track individual fouls and had the shot clock turned off during the game.

Cerro Coso attempted to not only utilize the extra time, but also attempted to press late in the game and nearly came through with a win.

“I should have pressed earlier,” Heck said. “I knew they struggled with the press against other teams.”

The Coyotes will hit the road on Thursday to take on College of the Desert starting at 5 p.m. in Palm Desert.
