The Cerro Coso women’s basketball team dropped its third straight
game, falling 63-58 to College of the Desert after blowing a large first
half lead.
The Coyotes held a 32-9 lead at the 2:20 mark in the first half. And
from that time through the rest of the game, Cerro Coso committed 29
turnovers and was out scored 54-26 for the rest of the game.
Starting at the 2:20 mark until half time, College of the Desert went on
a 12-0 scoring run.
The Coyotes were able to hang on through the majority of the game and
held a four point lead with 2:45 to play.
“We played decent half court defense, when we were able to play
defense,” said head coach Tom Heck.
Desert switched from a 2-3 zone to a man full court press, which helped
lead to the Coyotes’ troubles.
Cerro Coso is still down one of its starting players, Brenda
Cantrell, who was in a car accident over the holiday weekend.
“We simply turned the ball over too many times,” Heck said. “It’s going
to be hard to win games if we don’t improve in that department. I hope
we can get Cantrell back and play more than a half court game.”
Leading the way for Cerro Coso was Samantha Harrison with 16 points.
She was followed by Sherena Gene and Mariah Bomberry who each had 15
points.
Heck gave credit to Bomberry for “playing with one arm,” after suffering
an injury that left one of them sore for the game.
The Coyotes drop to 1-3 after winning their season opener against San
Diego City College.
College of the Desert improves to 5-4 on the season.
Cerro Coso will next take on Rio Hondo College in Whittier on Tuesday
starting at 5 p.m. The Lady Coyotes will return home on Dec. 7 to face
Barstow College.
