Coyotes take two of three in tournament

By Cheeto Barrera, Sports Editor, The Daily Independent

“Give credit to our kids, they’re road warriors...”

Though Cerro Coso has been struggling for wins of late, the Lady Coyotes took two out of three games at the College of Redwood Tournament over the weekend.

Cerro Coso (4-6) defeated Victor Valley College 60-47 in the consolation championship on Monday, carried by Sherena Gene’s 17 points and Mariah Bomberry’s double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds.

Gene was also named to the all-tournament team.

Despite the 60-point game, Cerro Coso was held to 49 points in each of the other two games.

“We haven’t been shooting very well at all,” said head coach Tom Heck, who racked up wins No. 101 and 102 in the tournament. “In the combined three game, we shot about 24 percent from the field and are shooting about 22 percent form the three point line. But our defense did play pretty well.”

The Coyotes opened the tournament with a 61-49 loss to Las Pasitas, with Bomberry racking up 15 points followed by LaShonda Jones with 12.
Cerro Coso followed that up with a rematch of Heck’s 100th win, taking on Mendocino College.

Like Friday’s game, Cerro Coso had to go to the wire, nursing a 47-44 lead with 13 seconds to go.

Brenda Cantrell missed a pair of free throws and Mendocino took the rebound and charged down the court. Instead of relying on a missed shot like on Friday, the Lady Coyotes stole the ball and scored a quick bucket to put the game out of reach and won 49-44.
Heck gave credit to his girls executing a triangle and two defense to shut down Mendocino effectively.

“Give credit to our kids, they’re road warriors,” Heck said. “They are playing short handed and some are playing hurt and they are playing as hard as can be.”

The Coyotes will close out their Northern California swing, taking on Marin tonight before coming home for a two game series against the junior varsity squad of Ursuline University from Ohio.
