Lack of size, depth, sink Coyotes, 60-41

By Cheeto Barrera, Sports Editor, The Daily Independent

“Forty minutes in an eternity when you don’t have depth..."

After a holiday hiatus, the Cerro Coso Women’s basketball team resumed play on Saturday, dropping a 60-41 decision to Mt. San Jacinto College.

San Jacinto (11-5) used its height and depth advantage against the Lady Coyotes (5-8), diminishing shooting opportunities and dominating the boards, 48-26.

Several of the rebounds came as scoring putbacks on the offensive boards.

Utilizing a man defense, the Eagles took a 26-17 halftime lead.

The Coyotes had seven players available, and their 10-day layoff showed, according to head coach Tom Heck, as the squad strained to go the entire 40 minutes.

“San Jacinto struggles at times to score, but they are so athletic and quick, they are one of the best defensive teams we’ll see,” Heck said. “Forty minutes in an eternity when you don’t have depth, and with the dreaded 30 second clock, it’s hard to slow the game down.

Heck is a staunch opponent of the shot clock, often suggesting it get increased to 45 seconds or simply done away with.

Battling the Eagles’ up-tempo game, Mariah Bomberry led the Coyotes with 13 points and 16 rebounds.

Brenda Cantrell followed with 10 points and four assists.

Sheerena Gene, the team’s second leading scorer on the season, was held to four points (none coming from field goals) since having to nurse an ailing foot.

Heck praised his team’s effort, but noted the Foothill Conference is extremely tough, and the Coyotes will still have to face one of the conference’s top teams in Antelope Valley on Saturday.

Game time is 7 p.m. at the Ray McCue Complex. Admission is free.

Coyote notes — Freshman Jaque Marshall, the team’s second leading rebounder and third leading scorer, is miss the remainder of the season due to a foot injury. ... Monday’s game at Victor Valley College was canceled due to a lack of officials.
