Cerro Coso women's basketball coach Tom Heck said his team played one
of its best defensive games when it took on Antelope Valley College on
Monday, despite losing 65-33.
For the first six minutes of the game, the Coyotes (6-14 overall, 0-11
in the Foothill Conference) held AVC (14-12, 7-3) to two points before
the Marauder athleticism took over and turned it into the 32-point game
at the end.
“It was the half court defense they played all season,” Heck said.
The problem for the Coyotes was ball control.
Cerro Coso had 37 turnovers, to the Marauders' 17.
“They just locked us up and we turned it over,” Heck said.
Antelope Valley took a 27-12 lead at the half and doubled its lead at
the end of the game despite the Coyotes putting up 21 points in the
second.
“The score really was indicative of the turnout,” Heck said. “We only
had seven players and all but two are hurting. Forty minutes really
feels like forever.”
Heck said his players were up to the task defensively, but the buckets
didn't drop.
Cerro Coso shot 30 percent for the game (13-43), and 20 percent (3-15)
from beyond the 3-point arc.
Sheerena Gene led the Coyotes with 15 points, followed by Mariah
Bomberry with nine. Brenda Cantrell led both teams in rebounds with
nine.
Leading the charge for the Marauders was Shakira Autry with 14 points.
Second on the list was Tracy Wittebolle with 11.
The Coyotes return home today to face Southwestern of Arizona, with
tip-off scheduled for 2 p.m. They return to conference play against
Victor Valley at home on Saturday, starting at 6 p.m.
