Cerro Coso pitcher Adam Garner joins teammates Mark Sayas and Paul Saville as All-Foothill Conference selections...

Trio of Coso Coyotes named All-Conference

Each brought something unique to Cerro Coso's table this season, and now all three are being recognized for that.

Pitcher Adam Garner, shortstop Mark Sayas and leftfielder Paul Saville were named All-Foothill Conference this week.

Saville, a sophomore from Burlington, Ontario, Canada batted .323 on the season, kicking that average up to .342 in conference competition.

Saville was also named Fire Mountain Foundation Athlete of the Year. He earned a 3.95 grade point average, and is committed to play next season at Div. I Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

“He's a quality person,” said CCCC head coach Dick Adams of Saville. “He's very strong academically...That made it easy to get him into a D-I with his talent.” FULL ARTICLE

Cerro Coso closed out the season Saturday with a pair of losses to Chaffey...

Coyotes twice blanked to end season

The 2006 baseball season came to a “sour ending” for Cerro Coso, according to head coach Dick Adams, after his team dropped 5-0 and 1-0 decisions Saturday at Chaffey.

“We should have won two out of three from Chaffey, we should have won two out of three from Rio Hondo,” he said. “That would have made our season completely different. But, ‘could've, should've, would've.'”

The Coyotes (21-23, 15-9 Foothill Conference), though eliminated from postseason contention, would not go down without a fight in the second half of the weekend doubleheader.

Adam Garner pitched 8 2/3 innings of shutout baseball, striking out three and walking just one.

Adams called it a “stellar” outing, which included 6 2/3 innings of Garner not giving up a Chaffey hit.

The Coso right hander and Chaffey's starting pitcher, lefty Brandon Villalobos, were locked in what Adams referred to as “a good old dual.” FULL ARTICLE

Errors become unearned runs in 5-4 Cerro Coso defeat

Five errors resulted in five unearned Chaffey runs yesterday in a 5-4 Cerro Coso loss.

“The infield is much better than it played,” said head coach Dick Adams.

Coso (21-21, 15-7 Foothill Conference) struggled defensively in a game Adams said was “sloppy” yet “exciting,” and the result was a heartbreaking defeat.

Chaffey's defense also had a rough afternoon, as it committed three errors and yielded three unearned runs of its own.

And all of those runs came in the fourth inning. FULL ARTICLE

Though he stands just 5-foot-8, Paul Saville's impact on Cerro Coso baseball has been immeasurable.

And after nearly two years of consistent batting and defensive play, the young man from Burlington, Ontario, Canada is ready to take his game to NCAA Div. I.

Saville is verbally committed to Texas A & M Corpus Christi, a member of the Southland Conference.

“He's the kind of kid who will...run through a wall if you ask him to,” said Coso head coach Dick Adams. “And he deserves what he's got coming ahead of him. He's earned it.”  FULL ARTICLE

Coyotes take two from San Jac: Chaffey is final conference foe

Thirty Cerro Coso hits Saturday yielded 30 runs, as the Coyotes twice downed Mt. San Jacinto at the Dawg Yard.

Coso (21-20, 15-6 Foothill Conference) got the bats going for 10-3 and 20-9 wins in a pair of games head coach Dick Adams said had misleading scores.

“These were both close games until about midway through,” he said.

Cerro Coso head coach Dick Adams called it “the inning from hell.”

Coso drops two games by two runs total

Cerro Coso twice battled back from early deficits against Oxnard College in yesterday’s doubleheader, but twice the Coyotes fell one run short in the final round of the Mashin’ the Mojave Tournament.

“Too many little mistakes,” said Coso head coach Dick Adams on the difference in the two non-conference games. “We couldn’t get it done.”

Among those little mistakes, base-on-balls proved costly for Coso (19-19) in game two of the afternoon twin bill, an 8-7 Oxnard win.

Coso’s Cameron White heads for first after connecting in the first game of yesterday’s doubleheader with Taft..

Cerro Coso’s Mash in the Mojave Tournament kicked off yesterday at the Dawg Yard with the locals picking up a pair of wins against Taft College.

Mark Sayas had a big day, batting 2-3 and 4-5 in the doubleheader. The shortstop did his part to help the Coyotes (19-17) to 5-4 and 18-11 wins.

Sayas drove in two runs under the lights in game two.

“He’s been our big money guy,” said head coach Dick Adams.

With Sayas contributing at the plate, Greg Byron (1-1) was big from the hill. The reliever came on from the bullpen in the second inning and went eight full innings to earn his first collegiate win.

“Byron was what we needed in that game,” Adams said. FULL ARTICLE

Cerro Coso had little margin for error in its weekend series with Victor Valley. The team is currently third in the Foothill Conference, seeking one of its two postseason berths.

The Coyotes answered the call with a pair of wins Saturday, 9-4 and 15-5.

Coso fell behind 2-0 early in the second half of the doubleheader. That gap didn’t last long.

Coyotes top Victor Valley in error-laden affair: Coso prevails 13-10 despite “sloppy play”

Cerro Coso and Victory Valley combined for 11 errors yesterday evening in a game CCCC head coach Dick Adams said was “played sloppy by both teams.”

But, errors or not, the Coyotes (15-17, 11-5 Foothill Conference) broke a three-game skid, topping the visiting Rams 13-10.

Though VVCC managed 10 runs on the game, Coso pitchers were tagged for just one earned run as a result of six Dawg errors.

Adam Garner started, giving up the only earned run, a solo home run in the first inning.

“Garner pitched effectively,” Adams said. “He was dominant like he usually is...but the defense didn’t play well behind him.”

Fortunately for Coso, while the defense was stumbling, the offense was striking. FULL ARTICLE

Coso drops third to Rio Hondo

It never quite clicked for Cerro Coso in the Coyotes’ Foothill Conference series against Rio Hondo, and the result was an 0-3 showing, which concluded Saturday at the Dawg Yard.

Coso (14-17, 10-5 Foothill) fell behind 7-0 early in the second half of a doubleheader en route to a 12-6 loss. Starting pitcher Aaron Keplinger gave up six hits in his two innings of work, including a three-run round tripper by designated hitter Victor Penedo.

Missed opportunities spell trouble in 5-3 Cerro Coso loss to Rio Hondo

Cerro Coso knocked on the door Saturday in the first half of its doubleheader with Rio Hondo, but couldn’t get the runs it needed in a 5-3 loss.

The Coyotes (14-16, 10-4 Foothill Conference) trailed most of the way, beginning with a two-run Hondo first inning, but had chances to bridge the gap.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom fourth, Jon Proesl and Paul Saville got aboard with back-to-back singles.

Dusty Romero smacked one into right-center field that scored the tying run Proesl and moved Saville to third with just one out.

And while the Foothill Conference season may be in its early stages, the second game Saturday was the difference between first and second place.

Big deficit too much for Coso in 16-11 loss:

Loss is Coyotes’ first in conference

Cerro Coso couldn’t recover from giving up 11 runs in the first two innings Saturday in the second half of its doubleheader with Antelope Valley.

AVC opened up against starting pitcher Aaron Keplinger for six runs in the first innings and five more against relievers Greg Byron and Dan Dobson in the second en route to a 16-11 final, Coso’s first Foothill Conference loss of the season.

“An 11-run deficit is tough to overcome,” said Coso head Dick Adams. “Especially in a seven-inning game.”

Because the first half of the doubleheader went nine, Coso (12-13, 8-1 Foothill Conference) and Antelope Valley played seven in the second half of Saturday’s slate.

Had it gone nine, the Coyotes may have been able to claw back. FULL ARTICLE

Different means lead to same ends for Coso vs. AVC

One was a heated defensive struggle, the other a Coyote slugfest, but both resulted in Cerro Coso victories this week when the team met Antelope Valley College for a Foothill Conference series.

Coso (12-12, 8-0 Foothill Conference) remained perfect in conference play through two in its series against the Marauders, winning Saturday at home 3-2 and Thursday 16-6 in Lancaster.

The second match on the series and Saturday’s opener of a doubleheader at the Dawg Yard was a pitcher’s duel, with Coso’s Adam Garner and AV’s Antone Ontiveros going throw-for-throw through nine innings.

Though the two hurlers differed vastly, with the 6-foot-3 right hander Garner bringing his powerful fastball and big slider, and the 5-foot-7 Southpaw Ontineros relying on a “crafty” approach, their results were similar.

Each team could manage just four hits apiece on the day. FULL ARTICLE

CCCC perfect in league with San Bernardino sweep

Cerro Coso completed a series sweep of San Bernardino Valley Tuesday with a pair of wins, 6-2 and 9-4.

Coso (10-12, 6-0 Foothill Conference) and SBVC went back and forth in the late innings of Tuesday’s second round in the doubleheader, but an early 3-0 lead and a four-run eighth inning provided head coach Dick Adams’ team the cushion necessary for the win.

Coso routs SBVC, remains perfect in conference

Wind and cold temperatures made for poor conditions yesterday, but if it affected Cerro Coso in its 17-6 win over Foothill Conference rival San Bernardino Valley it didn’t show.

The Coyotes (8-12, 4-0 Foothill Conference) never trailed in its fourth consecutive win, thanks in no small part to a five-run first inning.

“It looked like [SBVC was] bothered [by the conditions],” said CCCC head coach Dick Adams. “Our guys are conditioned, and we used that to our advantage.”

SBVC starting pitcher John Frisbie perhaps was among those “bothered” by the wind gusts. He had a rough start, walking two and hitting two Coso batters.

Short game sputters; Coso still wins 4-3

Cerro Coso’s Foothill Conference home debut may not have been as pretty as the team’s 17-7 win Thursday, but the Coyotes came out victorious, 4-3.

Baseball Team Christmas Tree Fundraiser

Each year the Cerro Coso Baseball team sells fresh-cut, top-quality Christmas trees as an annual fundraiser. If you are interested in supporting Coyote Baseball feel free to download the order form and return the completed form to Coach Adams by October 31st. There are several types of trees to choose from and wreathes and garlands are also available. Pick-up date is Saturday, December 3rd. See order form for full details.

This is a fundraising program, which is tax deductible, and best of all, supports your schools student athletes. You will receive a full refund if you are not completely satisfied.  Profits from the first 13 years played a significant financial role towards the building of our press box, snack bar, batting cages, and purchase of the scoreboard. With our current budget, we must use these profits for supplies (bats, balls, helmets, catchers gear, etc.). We appreciate your support.
