‘Hack’ garners awards before bidding Ridgecrest farewell

“Hack,” the Desert Dawg of the Year, and Kyle Hanson — different titles, yet the same person.

On Thursday, Cerro Coso Community College Baseball Coach Dick Adams honored Hanson as the team’s Desert Dawg of the Year — the Most Valuable Player, academic, and overall person — all packaged into one award.

“My mom always describes it as the person you’d like to have,” said Hanson “I love getting the award.”

Coso ends season with Chaffey split

Cerro Coso ended its 2007 on a high note: Defeating Foothill Conference champion Chaffey.

It came in the second game of the double header on Thursday, to give the 2007 champs just their third conference loss of the season as the Coyotes won 7-5. The win came after Cerro Coso shot itself in the foot with errors to lose 4-1.

The Coyotes finish the season 19-25 overall and 11-13 in conference play.

Despite chance to be spoilers, Cerro Coso shelled by Panthers in 19-3 loss

Tuesday was an opportunity for Cerro Coso to play the spoiler, but Chaffey had other ideas in a 19-3 loss.

Through the first four innings, the Coyotes trailed 12-1 as Chaffey kept things going with base hits and Cerro Coso errors.

Cerro Coso didn’t put a muzzle on Panthers until the fifth inning when Clint Williamson came in relief, yielding one run through three innings of work.

Coyotes win fourth straight, 10-2

Coming off a three game sweep over Victor Valley, the Cerro Coso baseball squad continued its winning ways with a 10-2 victory over Mt. San Jacinto.

The Coyotes have now won four in a row and improve to 9-10 in Foothill Conference play and 17-22 overall.

Jessie Zuber was shinned through out the game, with his only blemish on the day coming from a two-run homer.

Coyotes maul Victor Valley 37-10 in two games

Saturday was a type of day that the Cerro Coso baseball team hasn’t seen for awhile.

In a doubleheader against Victor Valley, the Coyote bats were on fire, scoring a combined 37 runs in the two games, winning the first 17-3 and the nightcap 20-7.

The offense racked up a combined 29 hits hitting a .408 on Saturday. The team had a combined batting average below .275 coming into the game.

Roadrunners drop boulder on Coyotes

Things looked to be going so for Cerro Coso heading into the eighth inning.

The Coyotes had survived an early bump in the road to go up 7-6 in the fourth inning and eventually extended the lead to 10-7 in the eighth.

Hoping to put the game away, and put a serious hurt on the second place Roadrunners in the Foothill Conference, coach Dick Adams brought in his closer Tyler McAllister to get the final six outs.

Rio Hondo had different ideas — 15 different ideas to be exact.

Coyotes manage split against Rio Hondo

Late inning heroics saved Cerro Coso against Rio Hondo in the first game of a double header on Saturday, but the same heroics couldn’t be repeated in game two.

Cameron White and Fred Bello both hit solo homeruns as the Coyotes came back from a 3-0 deficit to win 5-4.

In the second game, Cerro Coso had the tying run on third in the seventh inning with one out and a squeez bunt got popped up for a double play to end the inning and end the threat. The Roadrunners went on to win 5-4.

Ryan Gorzitze prepares to toss a runner out in the first inning against Oxnard on Wednesday.

Errors helped Oxnard build a 14-4 lead against Cerro Coso in the seventh inning of the night cap of the Mashin’ in the Mojave tournament. But the Coyote bats came to life in the ninth inning to make the game interesting.

Cerro Coso had the tying run come to the plate trailing 14-12. But the Condors managed to hang on to its lead to hand Cerro Coso its second loss of the tournament.

Cerro Coso kicks off tourney strong

One of the beauties of holding a large lead is the team holding it has a cushion to work within.

And when Cerro Coso went up 10-1, the team needed every bit of the cushion against Oxnard in the first game of the double header to kick off the Mashin’ in the Mojave Tourney, winning 10-8 on Tuesday.

Starter Colby Ingram had given up just one run through six innings and had completely shutdown the Oxnard players with help from the defense that committed just two errors.

“He really pitched well,” Adams said. “He hasn’t started in a while but he did a really good job.”

Coyote errors lead to 30 COD runs, twinbill defeat

As the errors piled up for Cerro Coso on Saturday, so did the runs for College of the Desert.

In the first leg of the double header, seven errors allowed the Roadrunners to drop a boulder on the Coyotes in a 10-2 rout.

Cerro Coso’s offense exploded in the second game for 11 runs in one inning, but the defense once again faltered, yielding an 11-run inning of their own as Desert took a 20-14 victory and a series sweep.

Cerro Coso to host Mashin’ in Mojave Tourney

“It’s nice playing in a home tournament.”

Cerro Coso’s annual Mashin’ in the Mojave returns today with three teams converging on Ridgecrest.

Pasadena, Oxnard and West Hills colleges will all see action with the Coyotes at the Dawg Yard in the three-day round robin tournament.

Cerro Coso will play a double header today starting at two when the team takes on Oxnard starting at 2 p.m. in a rain-make up from a tournament that was rained out in January.

“We need one of our most experienced sophomore pitchers to start producing if we’re going to get back in this.”

Despite a solid pitching performance for six innings, nine runs in two were all that College of the Desert needed to defeat Cerro Coso 9-4 on Thursday.

Jessie Zuber was taken out after one and a third innings, giving up nine runs, eight earned, on six hits and a walk.

“This is the third Thursday in a row that he hasn’t won,” said coach Dick Adams. “We need one of our most experienced sophomore pitchers to start producing if we’re going to get back in this.”

Relievers Colby Ingram, Ryan Gorzitze and Clint Williamson combined for four hits in five and two thirds innings, walking one and striking out five.

Missed opportunities, pair of errors lead to fourth-straight loss for Cerro Coso

Hitting woes continue for the Cerro Coso baseball team, dropping its fourth straight game, taking a 6-1 loss to Antelope Valley on Thursday.

A pair of errors allowed the Marauders to get on the score board and rally to take the win. Cerro Coso is now 3-4 in Foothill Conference Play.

A first inning boot gave way to 1-0 lead and a sixth inning error allowed Antelope Valley to regain the lead after the Coyotes had tied the game in the second.

Coach Dick Adams said pitcher Jessie Zuber had his stuff working, but some costly mistakes and missed opportunities forced Adams to end his night early.

Cerro Coso pitching roughed up in weekend series sweep

Cerro Coso pitching, normally a constant for coach Dick Adams, was shelled for 24 runs in two games against San Bernardino Valley as the Wolverines completed a three-game sweep of the Coyotes.

In game one, the Coyotes fell 10-5 and later 14-10 in game two.

“My team has not proven that they can come back from large deficits,” Adams said.

In five plus innings in the first game, Kyle Tullis and Colby Ingram combined for 10 runs — seven earned — on 12 hits and four walks.

Despite creating opportunities, Coyotes fall to San Bernardino

Cerro Coso’s baseball team were getting hits against San Bernardino Valley, but not when they needed them.

The Coyotes left 10 men on base, including seven in scoring position, and ultimately lost 9-6.

“(Our team) played hard, the kids went after it,” said coach Dick Adams. “But give credit to their pitcher. He did a pretty good pitching. We just didn’t get the hits when we had to have them.”

Cerro Coso's winning ways continue

“He just smoked a clean shot over left field...”

After snapping a six-game losing stint, the Cerro Coso men's baseball team has started another streak, this time a more positive one.

The Coyotes (9-10) swept a double header against Barstow on Saturday, winning 6-4 in the first game and 10-6 in the second, and now have won five in a row and have taken a perfect 3-0 start to Foothill Conference play.

In game one, Cerro Coso was forced to play catch up after Barstow's Trey Usirch hit a three-run homer in the first inning to put the Vikings up 3-0.

CCCC opens conference with win

A first inning run by Barstow didn't last long against Cerro Coso who scored a pair of runs to open the game en route to a 7-2 win in the Coyotes' first Foothill Conference match up.

The Dawgs are now on a three-game winning streak and improve to 7-10 overall (1-0 in conference).

Jon Proesl delivered the knockout blow in the seventh inning nailing a two-run jack over left center field to run the score up to 6-2.

Cerro Coso added an insurance run in the eighth when Fred Bello, who reached on a single and stole second and was moved to third by Clint Williams who pinch hit, was driven home by a Cody Rieger single.

CCCC wins in final preseason game

Cerro Coso's baseball team has won its second straight game Saturday defeating El Camino 4-1 after snapping its six-game skid.

Coach Dick Adams said it was one of the best games the Coyotes have played all season, with error not rearing its ugly head and a strong outing by Jessie Zuber.

“The team is finding right time start gel before conference starts,” Adams said. “We've put two wins together and knocked off two quality programs.”

The Dawgs ended a six-game losing streak on Feb. 24 by beating No. 8-ranked Golden West in 10 innings.

Golden West pitching brings wild end to Coyote losing streak

Of the five runs that Cerro Coso scored on Saturday, three were the result of Golden West pitching mistakes - one ended the game.

With runners at second and third with two outs and the score tied 4-4 in the 10th inning, Rustler pitcher Jeff Roth threw a ball in the dirt that catcher Billy Nowlin couldn't corral.

As the ball rolled to the backstop, Cameron White darted from third and crossed the plate surrounded by his teammates who had cleared from the Coyote bench.

Coyotes fall 11-6 in 13-inning marathon to Golden West

Cerro Coso had two bad innings against Golden West. Unfortunately for the Coyotes one of those two innings came in the 13th as the Rustlers recorded a 11-6 victory.

Coach Dick Adams said he was pleased with his team's performance but said closer Tyler McAllister - who came in the game with two outs in the seventh - became tired followed by Golden West getting some lucky breaks.

“My closer got extended, just had too many innings and got tired,” Adams said. “They got lucky. They had a few balls that fell into place.”

More tweaking to the Cerro Coso lineup may be in store following a 9-8 loss to El Camino on Tuesday, the Dawgs' fifth in a row.

With short stop Mark Sayas out with a twisted ankle, coach Dick Adams is trying to patch together his infield all the while trying find a player to take over at third.

Coach Dick Adams said he was not happy with the way the team played the game, committing four errors through three innings and a starting pitcher who was tagged with seven runs as a result.

The Cerro Coso Coyotes baseball team dropped a trio of games this week at the Pacific Coast Tournament in San Marcos.

The Coyotes began tournament play with a 10-0 loss to Mt. San Antonio College Thursday. Jessie Zuber pitched “well” for six innings in the estimation of Coyotes Head Coach Dick Adams, but suffered the loss to fall to 1-2 on the season.

SYLMAR - The Coyotes got started a little late Tuesday afternoon in their makeup game with Los Angeles Mission College, losing 7-6.

The Eagles (5-5) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second that Cerro Coso's (4-5) Jon Proesl quickly countered in the third with a solo home run. But the Coyote offense went dead for the next four innings while Missions was able to collect six more runs and take a 7-1 lead.

Lady Coyotes pillaged by Marauders in season finale, 63-34

The Cerro Coso women's basketball team closed out its season playing Antelope Valley College, the No. 6 team in Southern California, losing 63-34 on Monday night.

The Lady Coyotes close out the season with a 18-12 overall record and 5-8 in Foothill Conference play.

Monday also marked the final time that sophomores Angel Lash and Dar'Shelle Lynch will suit up as Coyotes. They were honored before the start of the second half with a few words from coach Tom Heck and flowers.

Cerro Coso records first home win

After suffering two losses at the hands of College of the Canyons on Friday at the Dawg Yard, Cerro Coso wasn't about to take a third loss on the weekend lying down. Unfortunately for visiting Long Beach City College, the Vikings were next up on the schedule.

The Coyotes unleashed a well-balanced hitting attack, combined with some solid all-around pitching to earn a 12-5 victory and even their record at 4-4 on the year.

Earlier in the day, Long Beach had played CoC and lost when the Cougars rallied in the bottom of the ninth to win 6-5. The win moved CoC to 7-1 on the year and handed the Vikings just the opposite at 1-7.

Cerro Coso faces tough pitching, drops pair in doubleheader

Things didn't go quite as planned for Cerro Coso in its impromptu baseball home opener Friday, losing the first game of a doubleheader 12-3 to the visiting Cougars from College of the Canyons. The Coyotes also dropped the nightcap 10-8.

Game one was especially tough as the locals faced a tough lefthander on the mound in Mike Robbins (1-1). Robbins, who had had a tough outing last weekend at the Western States Tournament, had no such difficulties Friday. Robbins set down the first 18 batters he faced, pitching a perfect six innings. He struck out four and walked no one.

“(Robbins) mixed his pitches very well against us,” said Adams, “and he was able to throw more than one pitch for a strike. That made it very tough to settle in on him and get anything going.”

Cerro Coso to open home play early as tournament is cancelled

The weekend schedule for the Cerro Coso Coyotes has some good news and some bad news.

The bad news is that forecasts for significant rainfall over the weekend in the coastal community of San Luis Obispo have forced the cancellation of the Cuesta Pepsi Classic.

Cerro Coso was scheduled to play Hancock, Cabrillo and Long Beach City colleges in the two-day event.

The good news? Well it's not only good for the Coyotes, but even more so for their fans.

Lady Coyotes fall to No. 5 team in Southern Cal

“I hope we have enough folks to play the last two games...”

Going up against the No. 5 ranked team in Southern California, and losing one of its top players in the first half, Cerro Coso lost to Mt. San Jacinto College 78-42 on Wednesday.

The Eagles remain atop the Foothill Conference with a 12-0 record (22-5 overall). The Lady Coyotes fall to 5-7 in conference play and 18-10 overall.

Coach Tom Heck said he was fortunate to have five players to finish the game with Dar'Shelle Lynch going down in the first 10 minutes of the game, Ashley Logan being sick for most of the game and LaShonda Jones unable to play because of a death in her family.

The Coyotes may have had an ACME safe drop on their heads in the second half, but it was the Roadrunners who fell off the cliff at game's end as Cerro Coso edged out Rio Hondo College 66-62.

The Lady Coyotes were on the wrong end of a 19-0 scoring run, but were able to regain their composure to survive the second half, thanks in large part to defensive pressure and Rio Hondo gifts.

McAllister steps up in Coyote wins

“...I had an experienced hitter at the plate, an experienced runner at third and figured we could do it.”

GLENDALE - Baseball teams at any level always look to have that one guy they can go to on the mound to put a game away. And while five games isn't a lot to go on, its' clear that the “go to” guy for the Coyotes early on is Tyler McAllister.

McAllister notched his second win and first save of the year over the weekend, helping Cerro Coso runs its record to 3-2.

“He's got that low three-quarter arm delivery, said Coyote head coach Dick Adams of his sophomore reliever, “and he is really throwing well right now.”

McAllister was the recipient of the win in Friday's 6-5 win over Moorpark in 10 innings, helping Adams get the upper hand over his alma mater. After pitching a scoreless tenth and striking out two, the Coyotes rallied for a run in the bottom of the frame.

Lack of good practice costs Cerro Coso

VALENCIA - He doesn't fancy himself a psychic or epic prognosticator, but Coyote head baseball coach may want to give those professions a look someday when he retires.

Warning his team that they hadn't had a good week's practice and to be focused going into Thursday's game, only some of the players on the Cerro Coso roster evidently took it to heart and the team ended up with an 8-3 loss on the road at College of the Canyons.

The Coyotes are 1-1 on the year.

SAN DIMAS - The Cerro Coso women's basketball team came from behind to defeat Life Pacific College on Saturday afternoon 68-62.

The Coyotes trailed by 11 at the intermission and used a full court 2-2-1 press and caused turnovers that led the comeback

With four minutes to play and the game tied at 58, Coso's Dar'Shelle Lynch stole the ball and scored a lay-up to put the Coyotes ahead for the first time in the game. The ladies held on down the stretch.

Cerro Coso celebrates unprecedented win with a 10 inning effort against Pirates

“Our kids played hard. We had good bench support and it was just a fun game to be around.”

VENTURA - For only the third time in their 15 years of existence, the Cerro Coso Coyotes opened their baseball season with a win. The victims were the Pirates of Ventura college, who the Coyotes pillaged for a 5-2 win in 10 innings in their opener of the Bash at the Beach Tournament.

“I'll tell ya,” said Adams after Friday's game, “Our kids played hard. We had good bench support and it was just a fun game to be around.”

Fun? Well maybe a little more for Cerro Coso then Ventura.

Tied 2-2 heading into the tenth inning, Cody Rieger led off by drawing a walk. He promptly moved to second on a wild pitch, and a few minutes later he was on third with the same assistance from the Pirate reliever.

Pressure key in Coyotes loss

“They just wore us out..."

Not able to respond to the pressure by Rio Hondo, the Cerro Coso women's basketball team lost 71-59 on Wednesday.

“We were just a bit out manned,” said coach Tom Heck. “They just wore us out. They pressed for 40 minutes and they shot well.”

The Lady Coyotes turned the ball over 25 times and shot 2-21 from the 3-point line and around 33 percent from the free throw line.

Cerro Coso splits pair

“A coach's fantasy is to have a practice and have everyone healthy,”

The one thing that Cerro Coso women's basketball coach Tom Heck said he wanted more than anything in a season is to have a healthy squad, at least temporarily.

“A coach's fantasy is to have a practice and have everyone healthy,” Heck said. “In the six years that I've been teaching here, I've never had that.”

But Heck and the rest of the Coyotes managed to keep it together despite injuries and sickness to win their 15th game this season, beating Victor Valley College 76-65 on Saturday, but fell 65-51 to Mt. San Jacinto College on Monday.

The Cerro Coso women's basketball team earned a 94-53 win against the College of the Desert on Wednesday at the McCue Center.

The game was tied at 24 with eight minutes remaining in the first half before the Coyotes went on a 14-2 run to take a lead at the intermission.

The Coyotes continued how they left off to start the second half by going on a 22-4 and lever looked back.

SAN BERNARDINO - The Cerro Coso Women's basketball team dropped an 85-46 Foothill Conference road game to San Bernardino Valley on Monday.

San Bernardino (14-6, 4-1), ranked No. 13 in Southern California, used a full court man press hat forced numerous Coyote turnovers.

The Wolverines led 10-6 at the 9:40 mark of the first half before going on a 10-0 run, taking a 14-point lead into the intermission.

Cerro Coso rolls past Warriors

Cerro Coso only had to battle for the first portion of the opening half against Life Pacific College of San Dimas with both teams knotted at 12 apiece.

But the Coyotes defense took over allowing the offense to explode with 43 points by half time en route to a 86-68 win Saturday.

And all of this was without forward Angel Lash, who has been a key component to the Cerro Coso game.

“It was a good effort tonight, we played without Angel, her shoulder was really bothering her so we were trying to save her for Monday night,” said coach Tom Heck. “The effort was great. Lynette Dineyazhe is back and that helped out on the perimeter.”

Former Coyote Jody Stevens begins 2007 as a volunteer coach at San Diego State University. Stevens will serve as first base coach and coordinator of various Aztec baseball camps. Coyotes win easily on the road, 70-53

PALM DESERT - The Cerro Coso women's basketball team defeated College of the Desert on Monday night 70-53 in Palm Desert.

The Coyotes got off to a slow start making two of their first 14 shots and falling behind by nine points in the early going.

Cerro Coso got back on track and went on a 12-2 run late in the first halve to take a 26-16 lead at the intermission.

The second half saw both teams trade baskets before the Coyotes finally pulled away building a 24-point lead and eventually winning 70-53.

With only six players available for Saturday's game, the Cerro Coso women's basketball team put up a fight against L.A. Harbor College but fell 58-52.

“We're missing four players and we had two playing sick,” said coach Tom Heck. “We've been off since Dec. 18 and our conditioning showed - we were really tired. You compound that with shooting 18 or 19 percent from the floor and it is really tough to win a basketball game.”

Lady Coyotes take consolation crown

EUREKA — The Lady Coyotes won the Consolation Championship of the College of the Redwoods Tournament Sunday by going 2-1 in the weekend-long event. They also added a victory over Cabrillo College Monday night to run their record to 11-4 on the year.

Cerro Coso’s win Sunday highlighted the weekend, as they trailed Mendacino College for 38 minutes before turning the tables on their opponents and claiming the win.

“This was a battle of internal fortitude,” said sixth-year head coach Tom Heck. “Everything seemed to go against us, but we just kept fighting back and it paid off.”

Cerro Coso earns home-court win

The Cerro Coso Lady Coyotes basketball team defeated Oxnard 74-71 in a non-conference game at the college Saturday.

Cerro Coso (7-3) jumped out to a first-half lead, holding an advantage by as many as 10 points before the intermission.

Oxnard, which had lost to Cerro Coso on its home floor earlier in the season, pulled back into contention, but Cerro Coso took the game when Kaylina Abeyta was fouled in the act of shooting a three-pointer with only one second remaining and the game tied. Abeyta hit all three shots to give the locals the win. She finished with 12 points and six assists.

Lady Coyotes improve to 6-2

“It's a severe blow to our program...”

The Cerro Coso women's basketball team improved to 6-2 on the season with a 66-55 win over Cuyamaca Monday night in San Diego, but the win was costly.

Redshirt freshman Brenda Cantrell, who sat out last year due to knee injury, reinjured the same knee early in Monday's game.

“It's a severe blow to our program,” said Coyotes Head Coach Tom Heck. “Brenda is a great floor leader and such a quality individual to have on this team.”

Cerro Coso grabs key non-conference win

“Those two really limited the touches of Oxnard's best players and that made a difference.”

The Cerro Coso Lady Coyotes basketball team picked up another non-conference victory Thursday night, as they traveled to the coast and defeated Oxnard College, 63-60.

Despite struggling from the outside all night long, Cerro Coso (5-2) overcame a five-point halftime deficit to grab the victory.

“We played a lot better in the second half, and made a few adjustments that worked for us,” said Coyotes Head Coach Tom Heck.

Lady Coyotes take consolation title

Continuing their early-season road swings, the Cerro Coso Lady Coyotes basketball team brought home the consolation championship at the Los Angeles Pierce Tournament over the weekend.

The Coyotes grabbed the consolation bracket title with a 61-53 win over Citrus College Sunday afternoon.

Coyotes coach Tom Heck credited solid defense in the second half to grab the win.

Lady Coyotes drop Foothill opener to Chaffey, 61-48

The Cerro Coso Lady Coyotes basketball team dropped their Foothill Conference opener 61-48 to Chaffey Tuesday night in Rancho Cucamonga.

The seventh-ranked Chaffey squad was helped by poor shooting from the Coyotes, who missed their first 11 shots of the night.

Cerro Coso had a rough night from the free-throw line, converting on only 12 of 33 attempts from the line. FULL ARTICLE

Lady Coyotes win opener 70-56: Lash’s 27 leads second half comeback for Cerro Coso

A 50-point second half was more than enough yesterday for Cerro Coso to defeat Cuyamaca 70-56 in the 2006-’07 season opener.

Forward Angel Lash scored 27 points to supplement an offense that in the first 20 minutes struggled.
